Overview
This 3 day climb to Bujuku Camp takes place in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park of Uganda, offering a challenging and scenic trek through diverse landscapes. The trek will begin at Nyakalengija and ascend through lush montane forests to Nyabitaba hut on the first day. On the second day, proceed to the targeted point of Bujuku Camp, standing at 3,962 meters above sea level with scenic views of Lake Bujuku, Mt Stanley, Mt Speke, and Mt Baker. The trail is amazing as you pass through the montane forests and bamboo trees, watching over different plants, birds, and animals.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba hut
Arrive at Nyakalengija gate, the starting point of the central circuit trail of Rwenzori mountain hiking. After registration, briefing, and hiring of porters, the trek was guided by the park ranger guide. Pass through the forest, spotting different animals and birds. Cross the Mubuku River and proceed to Nyabitaba hut, standing at 2,651 meters above sea level. Spend a night here as you enjoy nature.
Day 2: Hike to Bujuku Camp through John Matte
Have an early breakfast and begin a long and challenging hike to Bujuku Camp. The trail first descends briefly to the Kurt Shaffer Bridge, crossing the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. From there, enter the bamboo forest before opening into the heather zone, characterized by giant lobelias and a scenic moss-covered landscape. The trail becomes increasingly rugged and boggy as you approach John Matte’s hut to have lunch and rest. After a short break, proceed deeper into the alpine zone, crossing the famous big bog with the help of the wooden boardwalks. Enjoy stunning views of Lake Bujuku, Mt Stanley, Mt Speke, and Mt Baker. Your destination will be Bujuku camp, standing at 3,962 meters, and spend a night here.
Day 3: Descend to the Nyakalengija gate
Wake up early and prepare to leave the mountain after breakfast, retracing your route back to Nyakalengija gate. The trail takes you through John Matte’s hunt and proceeds through the bamboo forests and the montane vegetation. After a full day of trekking, arrive at the park gate for signing out, and this will mark the end of the hike.
