Overview
The 3 day Mahoma Loop takes you to Rwenzori Mountains National Park to take a nature hike in western Uganda. It offers a circular trek from and to Mihunga Gate, a scenic walk that takes you through a range of ecosystems from tropical montane forests to bamboo zones, heather ridges, and alpine. This is the best choice for nature lovers, birders, and adventurers who would want to experience nature in the Rwenzori without technical climbing. The Mahoma Loop is considered to be moderately challenging and requires a fair level of physical fitness.
Detailed Itinerary

Begin the journey in the morning to Rwenzori Mountains National Park from either Kasese or Fort Portal. Arrive at Mihunga gate for briefing and registration, which will be followed by hiking with guides, porters, and escorts. Carry enough water and energy-giving snacks to keep you fresh for about 5 to 6 hours at Omukakiza camp. The trail passes through the montane forest, and it follows the Kyambogo ridge with great views over the Mubuku Valley and the surrounding landscapes. Expect to spot animals like colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, baboons, vervet monkeys, and more birds like Rwenzori turacos, sunbirds, and more. Spend your first night at Omukakiza camp, a quiet Campsite surrounded by heather trees.
Day 2: Trek to Lake Mahoma
Enjoy breakfast and proceed with a hike passing through the bamboo forest that gradually transitions into giant heather and moss-draped Afro-Alpine vegetation. The hike is characterized by beautiful views of the Rwenzori mountain ranges and wildlife to expect here, including forest duikers, elephants, and more birds. After hiking for about 5 to 7 hours, you reach Lake Mahoma camp, standing at 3,515 meters above sea level, and this is the largest Crater Lake in the Rwenzori Mountains. This is a beautiful place to relax and capture memorable photos. Camp near the lake for your dinner and overnight stay.

The last day of your trek begins with breakfast in the mountains, followed by a descent back to Mihunga gate. The trek begins from the bamboo vegetation to thick forests, crossing several rivers, including the Mubuku River.
