Overview.
The 3-Day Nature Walk to John Matte Camp takes you on the enriching Rwenzori Central Circuit trail. The hike to the John Matte Camp begins from the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate and you will be accompanied by an experienced guide. The trek introduces you to the mossy heather zone (3500m).
Conquering the John Matte Camp comes with breathtaking views of the Stanley plateau glaciers on Mt. Stanley. The Nature walk involves navigating via a boggy part of the Rwenzori Mountains and relaxing at John Matte Camp. The camp is strategically set across the hill along the edge of the valley before you cross the Bujuku River to the lower Bigo bog.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Leave Nyakalengija for Nyabitaba Camp
After breakfast, you will be picked up by your safari expert and today, you will connect to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate (Mihunga). Get registered and also briefing from the officials. It is during the briefing session that you will meet your guides and porters.
After briefing, begin your guided walk through the Central Circuit trail. The nature walks through this trail involve crossing the dense forest on the Mubuku River and crossing the Mahoma River tributary. To get to Nyabitaba Camp, expect a long trek and steep walk along the ridge. As you head to the camp, don’t miss encountering colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys or listening to chimps calls. It is also an ideal point to spot some of the beautiful Rwenzori turacos. Overall, your trek will take 6-7 hours, and expect to have overnight at the Nyabitaba Camp (2651m).
Day 2: Nyabitaba to John Matte Camp (3505m)
Depart from Nyabitaba for John Matte Camp at 3505m a journey that will involve navigating via the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers. Expect to walk via the scenic bamboo forest and the slippery moss-covered rock.
Arrive at Nyamuleju Rock Shelter where you can enjoy excellent views of Mt Stanley and Speke. Make the final trek to the John Matte Hut and later pass via the boggy spot. The entire trekking journey will last for 7-8 hours and overnight will be at John Maate Camp/
Day 3: Descend from John Matte to Nyabitaba & Park gate for departure
After the leisurely breakfast, expect to return from the John Matte Camp to where you began your trek on the first day. It will be a 5-6 hour descending journey up to Nyabitaba Camp where you will settle for lunch. From Nyabitaba to the Park gate will take 3 to 4 hours and you will meet your driver guide to pick you up.
