Overview
In just 4 days, a hike to Bujuku Camp on Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains is possible. This thrilling adventure starts at Nyakalengija which is 1,615 meters above sea level. Hiking tours on the Rwenzori Mountains is offered by the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services. On the first day, you will have to arrive early in the morning at their offices at the starting point.
The hiking adventure will cost you USD 625 per person. Guiding fee and entrance to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park will also be catered for in the fee. This could also be paid in advance. Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Camp
Early in the morning you will arrive at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services offices at Nyakalengija (1615 meters above sea level). Here you will meet your hiking guides and porters to start ascending towards the Nyabitaba Camp (2651 meters above sea level). This part of the Rwenzori Mountains offers views of the Mubuku River and dense forest.
Wild animal species to see include the black and white colobus monkey, chimp, and blue monkey, among others. You can take photos for your future memories. There is a massive ridge as you hike up to reach the Nyabitaba hut. The Nyabitaba Camp is where you will have dinner and stay overnight. The hike from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba camp takes 5-8 hours.
Day 2: Nyabitaba – John Matte Camp
Early in the morning, you will wake up and start ascending to the John Matte Camp for 7-8 hours. This will take you to 3,505 meters above sea level. Along the trail, you will pass through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge. This is below the confluence of rivers Mubuku and Bujuku. Hiking along this trail offers views of the tranquil bamboo forest and moss-covered rocks.
You will reach the Nyamuleju rock shelter, and get proper views of Mountains Stanley and Speke. Get additional views of lovely plant species, including giant lobelias, heathers and groundsels. Take photos and continue the hike. Your will also enjoy seeing the bog before reaching the John Matte Hut. This is where you will have your dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: John Matte – Bujuku Camp and back to John Matte Camp
Wake up early in the morning to go for a hike that will take 3-4 hours. From Matte Camp, you will hike down to cross the River Bujuku and enter the lower Bigo bog. You will see plenty of giant lobelias here. Traversing the bog is quite challenging, but it offers close views of countless tussocks. These offer opportunities to take photographs.
You will reach the Bujuku lake where nice views of Mount. Baker and Mount. Stanley can be got. You will reach the Bujuku Hut at 3,909 meters above sea level. This camp is situated below the Stuhlmann Pass. Take all the best photos and at amazing angles to indicate your success of reaching this point. Return to the john Matte Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: John Matte – Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija Camp
Wake up for an early morning breakfast and start descending toward the Nyabitaba Camp. This is a 5–6-hour hike to the camp where you will have lunch. Afterwards, leave Nyabitaba Camp for Nyakalengija Camp. You will arrive back at the starting point after 3-4 hours. You will meet your driver guide to depart for another destination. This is the end of your 4 days Rwenzori hike to Bujuku Camp.
