Tour Overview
3 days Dian Fossey hike and Musanze caves tour is a historical tour that is aimed at updating you about the history of the tour’s main activities. You will visit Dian Fossey’s tomb, and Iby’iwacu cultural village, hiking will be part of the safari and visiting Musanze caves.
Dian Fossey’s tomb is located in the park and Musanze caves are all located close to Volcanoes National Park which is home to giant mountain gorillas, and golden monkeys among other wildlife however, gorilla trekking is not going to be part of this safari, but in case you have time you can go ahead and engage in gorilla trekking experience.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: City tour and transfer to Volcanoes
On this day, our company representative will pick you up from the hotel/airport, take you through the itinerary, and head for the Kigali city tour. You will visit the Kigali genocide memorial centre, you will proceed to different local markets, artisans and the presidential palace.
After this half-day city tour, enjoy a hot lunch and hit the road for 2 hours to Volcanoes National Park.
Arrive in the early evening, check-in at the lodge, and then go to Iby’iwacu cultural village. You will enjoy the touch of Rwandan culture through songs, names, dances and story tales, they also have craft shops from which you can decide to buy some souvenirs, and then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Hiking Mountain Karisoke
Arise in the morning, enjoy a heavy breakfast, get your lunch packed, meet your driver guide and be transferred to Kinigi which is the park headquarters for a briefing about the hiking experience, you will be able to hire porters who will carry your back bag, the walking stick will be provided free of charge and thereafter, start hiking.
You will be going through different vegetation meeting wildlife such as gorillas but you will not be allowed to stop since you will be on a different package, you will see golden monkeys, forest elephants, and birds among others.
After you have reached the Karisoke research centre, you will visit the graveyard of Dian Fossey who was an American researcher and was killed and buried in the park on 26th/December/1985.
Dian Fossey was buried near Digit was her favourite gorilla, after here, you will descend, meet your driver guide at the starting point who will transfer you to the lodge, relax and enjoy your dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Musanze caves and departure
After a hefty breakfast in the morning at your lodge, you will check out and head to Musanze caves to explore the beauty of this great hidden treasure. The cave is a result of volcanic action that worked on the area of mountain Sabinyo and mountain Bisoke the cave is believed to have been formed about 60 million years ago and it is connected to the Albertine rift valley.
The cave has 10 kilometer wide entry point with other 30 entrances and it was declared open to tourists in 2013. You will be given a guide who will be taking you to different corners of the caves, thereafter, you will check out and head back to Kigali thus marking the end of your tour.
