Uganda’s sprawling plains are as beautiful as its steamy forests where wildlife freely co-exists with people and preys with predators. Uganda is purely magical! Home to 10 huge national parks and 12 game reserves, Uganda teems with diverse wildlife, abundant flora and about 10% of the world’s population of bird diversity.
Navigate through the water bodies teeming with varied aquatic species, including Hippopotami and giant Nile crocodiles and then set off into the smoky mountains to stare into the eyes of a mountain gorilla, or visit its tropical lowland forests to meet the cheeky chimpanzees. Undoubtedly, Uganda is the only African safari destination whose range of forest primates is as impressive as its selection of savannah mammals. Yet there is more to this country than just wildlife!
Mountain gorillas are one of the subspecies of the eastern gorillas (gorilla beringei beringei) which are only restricted to the eastern part of Africa, in the Virunga region spanning Uganda, Rwanda and D.R. Congo. Though they predominantly inhabit rugged mountainous regions, but trekking to meet them in their composed families is truly a magical wildlife experience.Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda happen in only two parks; i.e. Mgahinga Gorilla N/park and Bwindi Impenetrable national park.
Both located in the southern tip of Uganda, in the mountainous Kigezi region, these in total are home to 50% of the world’s total population of mountain gorillas, with Bwindi alone hosting over 450 mountain gorillas out of just 1000 recorded worldwide. Only 17 gorilla families have been habituated in Uganda and are open daily to allow visitors access them.
Rwanda is small in size, but big in tourism! With only three gazetted national parks, Rwanda is full of exciting safari options and exciting experiences including gorilla trekking. Rwanda is among the three African countries that inhabit these iconic apes, and about a third of world’s population of mountain gorillas are recorded in Volcanoes national park alone. Volcanoes National park is located in north-west of Rwanda, bordering Uganda on one side and D.R. Congo on the other side.
It has over 11 habituated gorilla families open for trekking daily. Like any other gorilla destination, only 8 people are allowed to trek a given family of gorillas in Volcanoes national park. A gorilla trekking trip in Rwanda is so far the most expensive with a permit at 1500$ per trek. This is way more than Uganda’s permit at 600$ and D.R. Congo at 400$.
Africa boasts over 2,310 bird species, with approximately 1,400 species endemic to the continent. Of these, 10 are endemic bird families while 2 are endemic orders. Up to 248 African bird species are threatened globally while 117 have been categorized as nearly threatened, thus of conservation interest. Existence of this wide diversity of bird species is favored by a network of more than 1,250 Important Birding Areas (IBAs) spanning across 2 million Sq.km (7% of Africa’s total land area) covering 59 countries and territories. These habitats provide safe and healthy environment for the multiplication of bird species in Africa. 67 EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas) and secondary areas were also identified in Africa, to provide a practical focus for conservation agencies.
Uganda alone is home to some 1,010 bird species consisting of over 10% of total bird population in Africa. Uganda is remarkably a birding haven. This diversity of bird species is inhabited in its variety of ecosystems including rich savannas, lowland and montane forests, wetlands / marshlands, afro-alpine zones, and semi desert. Each of these habitats encompass respective species of birds. About 10% (150 species) of East Africa’s total bird population are found in Uganda alone; these include 7 of the 20 horn-bill species found in the region, ten flycatchers, 7 of 20 hornbill species, five out of 20 bush family, eight finches, 5 out of 14 honey guides, four tinker birds, 3 nightjars and 13 members of the thrush family, three cuckoos, three kingfishers and 3 sparrow hawks.
