TRIP DETAILS.

Day 1: Travel to Akagera National Park and boat ride on Lake Ihema.

Setting off very early in the morning for a 2-hour drive filled with stunning scenic views through Rwanda’s countryside. The driver guide picks you up from your hotel in the morning, briefs you about the trip, and transfers you to Akagera National Park.

The journey feeds your eyes with amazing scenic views along the highway, the thousand hills carpeted with ever-green vegetation is something the eyes can never get tired of. Arriving in the afternoon, have lunch and head for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema.

The ride exposes you to aquatic wildlife species like the hippos and crocodiles at the shallow ends of the lake. If you are a bird lover this is also a great opportunity to view several bird species and other land mammals that come along for drinking water. Returning to the lodge is in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Morning game drive and transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

Early morning after breakfast, embark on the safari vehicle and go for the game viewing experience through Akagera National Park. The drive in the park presents opportunities for spotting Africa’s big five; lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes as well as other animals like zebras, warthogs, waterbucks, topis and many others. The drive takes about three to four hours.

From the drive, have an early lunch and transfer to Volcanoes National Park. The journey gives you amazing sights of the Virunga-chained ranges that are shared by three African countries – Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Arrival will be in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Gorilla trekking and Ibyiwachu cultural village.

Today you trek the gorillas in their natural habitats. Waking up amidst the jungle trees, with sweet melodies of birds and insects to a delicious breakfast will be an awesome experience that will welcome the day for you. Head to the park station for a brief orientation from the local park ranger. He takes you through the guidelines of gorilla trekking while in the forest.

Now you will hit the forest in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. Trek through the thick forest, walking in slippery trails and having to pave yourself a clear path out. On meeting the apes, the whole experience becomes worth, nothing thrills like watching a female adult feed her little one with breast milk, or a silverback aggressively watching over his family.

In the one hour that you will spend with the gorillas, you will learn so much about them and take many pictures and videos, as long as the camera has no flash.

Now slope back to the park headquarters to be awarded your certificate of appreciation and head back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. Spend the evening at the Ibyiwachu cultural village; a one-stop center for all that is Kinyarwanda culture. Enjoy the traditional performances, taste the local cuisines, and buy crafted souvenirs to carry back home.

Day 4: Depart from Volcanoes National Park.

Have breakfast, check out of the lodge, and travel back to Kigali. On the journey, enjoy more sights of the beautiful scenery and have several stopovers at places of interest. That will be the end of the trip.
