BIGODI WETLAND SANCTUARY

Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary is a community-based initiative situated in Magombe swamp at the edges of Kibale National Park, host to the biggest numbers of chimpanzees in Uganda. The main aim of preserving Bigodi was to protect the vast Magombe swamp.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary was initially known as “Magombe” locally meaning “the graveyard”. This is because of a large number of people who were swallowed by the swamp a long time ago when constructing the bridge.

Bigodi is recognized as one of the most popular bird destinations in Uganda and the best place to sight a wide number of stunning bird species. The birding destination receives visitors from all parts of the world including both domestic and international visitors especially those who come to visit Kibale National Park. A bigger percentage of the accumulated income from the sanctuary is meant for the local community since it plays a big role in managing this natural resource.

BIGODI AS A HOTSPOT FOR BIRDING AND DIFFERENT BIRD SPECIES FOUND THERE.

A large number of visitors actually prefer carrying out their birding activities in Bigodi wetland sanctuary to Kibale National park. This is because Bigodi offers the most clear stunning views of different bird species unlike the impenetrable Kibale dominated by dense and thick forests.

When on Uganda tour safaris and yearning to get the best out of it, visiting Bigodi is a must. The popular birding destination hosts 138 different bird species. Its rich biodiversity largely contributes to the survival of these bird species and other wildlife in the area.

Several primate species in search of food can also be sighted in the wetland including black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, baboons, Grey-cheeked monkeys and blue monkeys.

Among the different bird species sheltered at this popular birding spot you’ll notice the country’s national bird-the crested crane, African pitta, black bee eater,  brown chested alethe, crowned eagle, purple breasted sunbird, spotted nectar,  blue breasted Kingfisher, yellow rumped tinkerbird, little greenbul to mention but a few. The rich biodiversity of the swamp favors their survival and accommodation as the wetland harbors a few predators yet attracts more insects, toads and frogs for birds to feed on.
