Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a popular experience, enjoyed by many, and a once in a lifetime adventure experience. Gorilla trekking in Uganda has seen the tourism sector of the country booming hence Uganda earning international recognition. This is the reason why the two popular gorilla trekking destinations in the country received a great number of travelers and guests from all parts of the world, especially during the summer peak season.

Uganda is among the only three countries which are hosts of the endangered mountain gorillas still in the wild.

The other two hosts are the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. All these three hosts lie in the Virunga region which is popular for sheltering the only remaining mountain gorillas. Rwanda’s popular gorilla trekking destination is the Volcanoes National Park while the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga is also another popular gorilla trekking destination.

There are only two gorilla trekking spots in Uganda and these include Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. With about a thousand mountain gorillas living in the wild, Bwindi shelters almost half of them, hence elevating this gorilla trekking destination to the international scene. Both Mgahinga and Bwindi are situated in the southwestern part of the country in Kisoro district.

Uganda is now one of the leading gorilla trekking destinations in the world attracting both domestic and international visitors from all parts of the world. While Mgahinga shelters only one habituated gorilla family, there are 21 habituated gorilla families in the enormous forest of Bwindi which is divided into four gorilla sectors. The Buhoma gorilla sector is the most popular hence visited by many tourists. There are four gorilla families in Buhoma sector including Habinyanja, Mubare as the oldest family, Katwe and Rushegura.

All gorilla trekking activities in both Bwindi and Mgahinga National Park start at around 7:30 am with a guiding briefing and then visitors are led by park rangers and tour guides to the trekking trails in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. While trekking these human-like primate species, trekkers will also come across other wildlife species, like birds, butterflies and primates.

Once the tracked gorilla group is allocated, trekkers are advised to keep a minimum distance of about 7 meters and only spend one full hour with these endangered mountain gorillas.

During the encountering process is when trekkers get an opportunity to learn more about these human-like primate species that share 98% of the human genetic code, their behaviors, breastfeeding habits and feeding habits.

GORILLA TREKKING IN MGAHINGA AND BWINDI FROM ENTEBBE.

Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s national Airport and gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga from Entebbe is possible. It involves a long drive of about 8 to 10 hours from Entebbe to Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park.

This can be done during an itinerary of 3 days of gorilla trekking tours where the first day is used to set off from Entebbe to the gorilla trekking destinations and on the second day, visitors can wake up very early in the morning and get prepared for the long day of gorilla trekking in either Bwindi or Mgahinga while the third day can be used to travel back from Mgahinga or Bwindi to Entebbe international Airport.

While on these long journeys, visitors can see other tourism attractions on their way, for example Lake Mburo National Park along the Masaka-Mbarara highway.

DISTANCE FROM ENTEBBE TO MGAHINGA AND BWINDI.

Both of Uganda’s gorilla trekking destinations that include Mgahinga and Bwindi can be accessed by either road means of transport or Flight connections. By road means, the journey from Entebbe International Airport to both Bwindi and Mgahinga takes about 8 to 9 hours. The road distance from Entebbe International Airport to Mgahinga or Bwindi is about 500 km and the park can be accessed through the Kampala-Masaka highway depending on the gorilla sector being visited.

The Nkuringo and Rushaga gorilla sector in the southern region of Bwindi can be accessed along the Kibale-Kisoro highway.

Flight connections are also available where visitors can opt to catch a flight at around 7:00 am from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro airstrip from which gorilla sectors like Rushaga and Nkuringo in the southern sector can be accessed.

We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. Just look for the guy with a big smile and big heart:)

We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Coleb delivered on everything that was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

The car provided was in great condition and our driver Meddy went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed, and had the best possible time. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. All local services were inlcuded in (reasonable) price that we agreed, so there was no need to worry about payments during the 6 day trip. Also Standard Safaris agreed took care about safety and security by helping us organize armed ranger while in the park.

The whole trip was hassle-free and smooth. We saw amazing wildlife in Queen Elizabeth NP, took in the sights of Rwanda and Burundi, and made lifelong memories.

Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. We had done a lot of research and had an itinerary in mind and Coleb helped us to put everything together to make this happen for a very reasonable price.  On the trip we had a private vehicle for the whole tour which was exactly what we wanted. Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.

This is so far the best gorilla trekking company in Uganda, and africa, by far. I had a wonderful time with Standard Safaris as a solo traveler.
