The Polish Church in Masindi, Uganda.

The Polish Church in Masindi district, western Uganda is in Nyabyeya near Masindi Town. The Polish Church also known as Our Lady Queen of Poland Catholic Church was built in honor of the then Queen of Poland, Blessed Virgin Mary. Construction was done between 1943 and 1945, by mostly women refugees and exiles from Poland to Masindi.

At the time, around 2,000 Poles including children, women, and elderly men had fled from Poland to western Uganda thanks to World War II which had spread them to various countries. Some arrived in East Africa by boat via Mombasa, where they were transported by rail from Kenya to Lake Kyoga region and into Masindi district. Even after the end of World War II in 1945, the British started closing down camps. Of the 18,000 Poles who reached East Africa including Uganda, from Siberia, only 3000 returned to their home country.

The Polish Church has several inscriptions in Kiswahili, English, Latin, and Polish. At the entrance, the inscription reads, “Poloniae semper fidelis.” Next to the church building, there is a renovated Polish cemetery with at least 50 gravestones. Here, there is an inscription that reads “Pray for the Poles who died in 1939-1947.” Additionally, the church walls have pictures of the “way of the cross,” which implies a short but agonizing journey Jesus Christ took before he was killed for the sins of his followers.

A Polish lady Stanislaw Lula, who arrived in Uganda at age 16 said that Masindi estate is a large village built especially for the reception of Polish refugees consisting of 8 villages connected. Her village Monkey Grove was neighboring a bush and had a variety of monkeys.

Packing for a Polish Church tour in Masindi

The most favorable time to visit the Polish Church in Masindi is during the dry season. This typically occurs from June to September and from December to February. These months receive relatively minimal rainfall amounts and the weather conditions are relatively mild compared to the wet season. These conditions are suitable for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The skies are usually clear, to offer excellent visibility as you view the lovely architecture of the building while taking photos.

However, like most places in Uganda, Masindi’s climate is unpredictable, with occasional rainfall even in the dry seasons. You are therefore advised to be prepared for sudden weather changes, by bringing gear suitable for rainy seasons. Since the dry seasons usually coincide with peak tourism seasons in Uganda, expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices. We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Coleb delivered on everything that was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

The car provided was in great condition and our driver Meddy went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed, and had the best possible time. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. All local services were inlcuded in (reasonable) price that we agreed, so there was no need to worry about payments during the 6 day trip. Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. Game drive security is assured.
Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.
Everything was arranged and booked perfectly by Standard Safaris.
The owner, Coleb was always helpful whenever we needed to ask questions about this gorilla safari in Uganda and beyond.
It was a complex expedition but Standard safaris and Coleb made it look amazingly easy.

This is so far the best gorilla trekking company in Uganda, and africa, by far. I had a wonderful time with Standard Safaris as a solo traveler.
