SEBITOLI CHIMPANZEE SECTOR, KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

Sebitoli chimpanzee sector is situated on the northern edge of Kibale National Park located in the western region of the country about 5 hours’ drive from Kampala. Kibale National Park is a renowned destination in Africa for chimpanzee trekking and has the highest number and diversity of primates in the whole of Africa. Kibale National Park houses up to 13 different primate species with the most popular of these being the chimpanzees that are estimated to be more than 1,500 individuals. Other primates include the uncommon L’Hoest’s monkeys, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus, bush babies, grey-cheeked mangabeys, blue monkeys, olive baboons, and many more.

The Sebitoli chimpanzee sector is part of the 766 square kilometer area covered by Kibale National Park. It is mainly dominated by secondary forests that make up 70% of the vegetation cover, 14% are mature forests, another 14% are terrestrial herbaceous vegetation and 1% are patchy shrubs or wetland vegetation. The Sebitoli chimpanzee sector is a haven for more than 100 individual chimpanzees that are often sighted on one’s visit to this sector. Having undertaken a briefing about the dos and don’ts of chimpanzee trekking at the park headquarters, visitors are accompanied by ranger guides to embark on the search for our closest cousins in their natural habitat. This involves traversing through forest trails and navigating through dense vegetation in search of these fascinating primates. Their haunting calls will always signal their presence after which they are located as they go by their routine activities.

Observing their intricate interactions as infants and juveniles swing from one tree branch to another is awe-inspiring. After an hour elapses in their presence, visitors make treks back while their eyes are easily drawn away by other primate species such as the L’Hoest’s monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, and many more.

Bird watching

The Sebitoli chimpanzee sector protects more than 370 bird species including those that are residents of this area as well as migratory bird species. Guided by a knowledgeable bird guide, visitors embark on the search for different bird species through different birding trails as they are easily blown away by the mesmerizing calls of these avian species. Bird species to look out for include the great blue turaco, African pitta, yellow-ramped tinker bird, double-toothed barbet, Nahan’s francolin, blue-headed bee-eater, green-breasted pitta, white-collared olive back, western nicator, lowland masked apalis, little greenbul, afep pigeon, blue-breasted kingfisher to mention but a few.

Accessibility

The Sebitoli chimpanzee sector in Kibale National Park can be accessed by both road and air transportation means. By road, it takes about 4 to 5 hours to drive from Kampala Uganda’s capital to Kibale National Park and then connect to Sebitoli in the northern section of the Park. This sector can as well be accessed from Fort Portal Uganda’s renowned tourism city which is just 12 kilometers away. By air transport, one can access the Sebitoli chimpanzee sector by taking a chartered domestic flight from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airstrip to Kasese airstrip and then take a 2-drive to Fort Portal and later connecting to the sector.

When to visit Sebitoli

Although Kibale National Park is open to visits throughout the year, the best time to visit the Sebitoli chimpanzee sector is during the dry season when the trails are dry and passable. This period runs from June to September and December to February. The other months of the year are wet implying that there are heavy downpours received during these months of the year though they are incredible for bird watching.
