The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Uganda differs depending on where you will be trekking from. Uganda was once described by Winston Churchill as the pearl of Africa and is one of the most rewarding destinations in the world. Chimpanzee trekking is done in four destinations managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The trekking permits can only be acquired from the Uganda Wildlife Authority through a registered Tour operator.

Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve
Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve is one of the renowned chimpanzee trekking destinations in Uganda. It is situated in the Rubirizi district and about 375 kilometers from the capital city Kampala. While here, visitors can get a stunning view of the Rwenzori ranges, the Kazinga channel, and Lake George. Over 300 chimpanzees call this forest their home and can be spotted in the morning or afternoon trekking sessions.
The cost of trekking chimpanzees in Kalinzu forest is quite budget friendly at USD 130 for foreign non-residents and USD 65 for foreign residents and East African citizens. This amount includes entrance fees, guide fees, and conservation fees.
Kibale Forest National Park.
Kibale Forest National ParkKibale Forest National Park is located in the western part of Uganda in the tourist city of Fort Portal. It is the most famous chimpanzee trekking destination and a must-visit. It is home to over 13 unique primate species notably the white and black colobus monkeys and chimpanzees.
The park harbors over 1500 Chimpanzees which you can encounter during either morning or afternoon chimpanzee trekking session. The trekking permits cost USD 250 for foreign non-residents, USD 200 for foreign residents, and UGX 180,000 for East Africans. Kibale Forest National Park also offers chimpanzee habituation experience which is USD 300 for foreign non-residents, USD 250 for foreign residents, and UGX 250,000 for East African citizens.
Budongo Forest
Located on the southern boundary of the largest national park in Uganda, Budongo forest is a great option for chimpanzee trekking. There are over 600 chimpanzees at this sanctuary visited during the morning and afternoon trekking sessions. Budongo forest is a natural forest with some of the oldest mahogany trees in Africa. It is home to over 366 bird species and 450 plant species and covers about 825 square kilometers. Budongo forest permits cost USD 130 for foreign non-residents, USD 120 for foreign residents, and USD 85 for East Africans. This permit price excludes entrance fees to Murchison Falls National Park.
Kyambura Gorge
The mighty “Valley of Apes”, Kyambura gorge is located in the western region at the border of Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is one of the most visited areas and the only underground forest in Uganda. The gorge harbors about 80 chimpanzees co-existing with other primates such as the baboons, red-tailed monkeys, white and black Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and more. The trekking permit costs USD 100 for foreign non-residents, USD 80 for foreign residents, and UGX 50,000 for East Africans. The cost excludes entrance fees to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Who qualifies for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda?
The trekking exercise is reserved for only persons aged 15 years and above with valid trekking permits. All trekkers are expected to present valid trekking permits, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and a passport to confirm one’s identity. The requirements are presented during the pre-trekking briefing session at the trailhead.
