The lush Budongo Forest in the northwestern part of Uganda offers some of the most delightful night nature walks in the country. This delightful guided adventure starts at Kaniyo-Pabidi Ecotourism site at around 6:30 PM. You must be at the site in time for the briefing by the forest rangers. Then you will be led by experienced rangers along the forest trails to experience the tranquil atmosphere of Budongo Forest reserve after dark.

About Budongo Forest?
Budongo Forest is situated in Buliisa, Hoima, and Masindi districts in northwestern Uganda. Gazetted in 1932 and covering around 825 square kilometers of surface area, Budongo Forest is the largest natural forest reserve in Uganda. Budongo Forest is found on the edge of the iconic western Rift Valley with Lake Albert to the northwest.
The landscape of Budongo Forest is characterized by gently undulating ridges and valleys. Its altitudinal range is 1,000 to 1,100 meters above sea level. The ecosystem is dominated by medium-altitude moist semi-deciduous rainforest. Tropical high forest, woodland, grassland, wetland, and farmland habitats are also part of Budongo forest. Four rivers, Waisoke, Sonso, Bubwa, and Wake, drain into Lake Albert.
Budongo Forest has a high population of mahogany trees, in fact it has some of the highest in any natural forest in East Africa. These include African mahogany, sipo mahogany, sepele mahogany, and East African mahogany species. Other tree species include cheese wood, paper mulberry, African walnut, Uganda ironwood, scented guerea, tigerwood, backcloth tree, Albizia sp., African teak, wild mango, red-fruited white-stinkwood and yellow brown timber.
Fauna includes mammal species, primate species, bird species, and forest swallowtail butterflies, etc. There are over 24 species of mammals, including the blue duikers, Weyn’s duikers, bushpigs, harnessed bushbucks, and porcupines, etc. About 9 primate species include chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, western red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, bushbabies, and olive baboons.
Bird species include the little greenbul, fire-crested alethe, yellow-crested woodpecker, olive-green camaroptera, red-chested cuckoo, western black-headed oriole, white-throated greenbul, blue-breasted kingfisher, tambourine dove, crested malimbe, rufous thrush, yellow whiskered greenbul, green hylia, great blue turaco, Nahan’s francolin, black-throated apalis, white-thighed hornbill, chestnut wattle-eye, brown-crowned eremomela and olive sunbird etc.
Budongo Forest experiences tropical climatic conditions with a bimodal rainy season. March to May experiences the long rains, while September to November is for the short rains. The annual rainfall received in Budongo Forest is 1,410 mm. The annual average temperature experienced is around 29°C. The dry season is experienced in the months running from June to August. December to February is also a dry season, but with expected light rains.
Best time to experience night nature walks in Budongo Forest?
Since Budongo Forest is accessible for tour activities year-round, visit there for night nature walks on any given day. Nonetheless, night nature walks require traversing on forest trails, which makes the adventure more challenging when the forest is soggy and with heavy undergrowth. We at Standard Safaris recommend that you visit Budongo Forest in the dry season to avoid those challenges. This ensures that you walk on drier trails and in a less dense forest.
How to reach Budongo Forest?
You have 2 options of transportation to reach Budongo Forest. The first is road transport. Kaniyo Pabidi ecotourist site is enroute to Murchison Falls National Park and is at least 220 km from Kampala. This is a 4-5-hour road trip using the Kampala-Gulu highway, and via the Masindi district. With private means of transport, you can choose any of Standard Safaris’ cars available for hire. These are 4-wheel safari cars, drones, buses, saloon cars, minivans, etc.
The second option is air transport, with domestic flights offered by AeroLink from Entebbe International Airport to Pakuba or Chobe airstrips. You will only travel for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Then you will reach Kaniyo-Pabidi in Budongo Forest by road transport. This is a less than 30 kilometers drive and Standard Safaris can arrange this service for you.
