Overview.
The 10-Day Hike to 4 Peaks of the Rwenzoris takes you on a challenging trek to the snow-capped summits of Rwenzori Mountain ranges. The hike involves winding through the breathtaking landscapes characterized by dense forests and alpine meadows. The focus will be to conquer the Margherita (5109m), Baker (4844m), Speke (4890m), and Weismann peaks (4620m).
A reasonable physical fitness and preparation will be required to enable you to conquer the varying terrains of the 4 magnificent summits of Mount Rwenzori. Your trek won’t come with breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks alone, but also some wildlife, especially at the base area of Mt. Rwenzori.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Travel to the briefing point at the base of Mt Rwenzori & trek to Sine Camp (2596m)
Enjoy an early breakfast at your respective hotels in Kasese and later meet your safari expert. Get a short briefing and after head to the base of Mt Rwenzori to get registered with the authorities. Today, expect to begin your captivating trek from an elevation of 1450m to Sine Hut (2596m). Enjoy a thrilling trek through the scenic valley flow and tall forest trees of the African montane forest zone. As you concentrate on your hike, expect astonishing sights of some birds, blue monkeys, black and white colobus as they swing from tree to tree, l’hoest monkeys, and more.
Climbers also have a chance to observe a range of plant species and the splendid waterfalls. On arrival at the Sine Camp (2596m), expect to find wooden huts set between tall forest trees along a narrow ridge where you can appreciate the lush beauty of the Afro-montane forest as well as the stunning waterfall below. Feel free to relax from outside the hut as you enjoy the warmth at the campfire while you interact with your guides. From the Sine Camp to Enock Waterfalls is 150m. Have an overnight stay at the Some Camp (2596m).
Day 2: Trek to Mutinda Camp (3588m)
Set off for your next adventure stage starting at around 8:30 am penetrating via the bamboo-Mimulopsis zone on a steep hike. Take note, during the rainy months, the bamboo zone can be muddy and slippery hence require slow speed. As you head towards Kalalama camp (3147m), expect en route spectacular views of the lush forest.
Kalalama camp is set within the Heather-Rapanea zone an area where hikers will have a short rest and a hot cup of coffee/tea. After the tea/coffee, proceed up to Mutinda Camp on the meandering trail which comes with great sights of moss and waterfall views. Take a steady hike along the mossy river and via the deep valleys as you observe the diversity of plants.
Later in the afternoon, you may proceed to the Mutinda Lookout to enjoy breathtaking views of the moss-covered rocks at an elevation of 3925m. At a distance, don’t miss the jaw-dropping views of the Rwenzori peaks and Kasese Town as well as Lake George. Hiking to the Mutinda Camp offers a remarkable acclimatization experience to those with plans to conquer the Margherita Peak.
Day 3: Mutinda Camp-Bugata Camp
Leave Mutinda Camp for Bugata (4062m) navigating via the scenic Mutinda valley characterized by tussock grass and flowers interspersed with several giant lobelias. After, expect to get challenged by the steep hike to the Namusangi Valley at 3840m. Expect to also appreciate the scenic waterfalls and Mutinda peaks. Navigate via the wide Namusangi Valley as you proceed up to Bugata Camp.
Day 4: Trek to Hunwicks Camp
Depart for Hunwicks Camp with an expert on the lead. Today’s trek will involve navigating via a ridge on a descending and ascending journey to Bamwejarra Pass (4450m). At the Bamwejarra pass, expect to enjoy spectacular views of the main peaks. Descend via the valley while viewing the bogs and thick evergreen vegetation, lobelia, giant groundsels, and moss.
You may also come across the malachite sunbirds. Continue further to the steep part of the mountain as you head to the Hunwick’s Camp located on the top of the deep valley. At Hunwick’s Camp, you will have a great treat to the breathtaking Mount Stanley views, Weismann’s Peak, Baker, and McConnell’s Prong.
Day 5: Hike to Mt Baker & Return to McConnell’s Camp
Set off early for a 4-6-hour hike to the magnificent Baker Peak (4842m). You will ascend from the McConnell’s Camp for about 3-4 hours and spend another 4 hours descending. Take note this is a steep rocky area and climbers can find a challenge conquering the glaciers, especially around the wet season. To ensure visitor safety, there are safety ropes to assist you get through the steep part of the Baker Peaks.
Once you have reached the summits, you will begin descending along a crack in the rock face to the glacier and a 300m walk to the peak. On a clear day, you may have great views of the Margherita, Alexandria, glaciers, and plateau of the Stanley Mountain. Later, you will begin descending to McConnell’s Camp 4 for relaxation and overnight.
Day 6: Trek to the Margherita Camp
Have a hot cup of tea/coffee and after, depart for the Margherita Camp (4485m). The hike involves navigating via the valley floor to Lake Kitandara. Trek through Scoot Elliot passes to the Margherita Camp.
Day 7: To the Margherita Peak (5109m)
Get up early to prepare and also have breakfast. After, start your trek to the final summit and your journey includes navigating via the glaciers. The lower part of the glacier is a bit steep and you may need ropes as you approach the top glacier, you may encounter steep rock 60m to the ridge connecting to the Margherita peak (5109m).
Descend from the Margherita peak after photography and breathtaking views. As you descend, expect to view the Irene Lake and Bujuku valley and cross the boggy area as you connect to the base of Mount Speke (4890m).
Day 8: Hike to the Vittorio Emmanuel summit on Mount Speke
Proceed from your camp to Mount Speke (4890m) and at the summits, appreciate the magnificent views of the Vittorio Emmanuel peak and its surroundings. After, begin returning and your journey includes crossing the Bujuku Valley as you head to the Scott Elliot pass. Later, descend to Hunwick’s Camp for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 9: Weismann’s Peak & descend to Kiharo Camp
Have an early breakfast and after, set off from Hunwick’s Camp to the Weismann’s peak (4620m). Navigate via the ridge towards McConnell’s Prong the perfect spot to enjoy excellent views of the 3 peaks and Scott Elliott’s pass then continue to Oliver’s pass (4505m).
Climbers who are energetic enough can proceed up to the summits of Weismann’s peak and then descend up to Kiharo Camp (3430m) for relaxation.
Day 10: Descend to the briefing point & depart
Begin your trek from Kiharo Camp to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate about 12.2 km then take an additional 2.8 km to the trekkers hostel. The hike includes navigating via the Nyamwamba Valley with great views of the moss-covered rocks along the river, waterfalls, forests, and deep valleys all awaiting you.
Arrive at the park offices to get a warm welcome back from the summits and you will be provided certificates. Later, connect to your hotel in Kasese for relaxation.
