Overview
The 6 day hike to Weismann Peak takes you to explore one of the best places in Rwenzori Mountains National Park. This moderately challenging trek offers an opportunity to explore the diverse ecosystem of Uganda’s high mountain range-ranging from montane forest to alpine meadows, giant lobelias, and glacier landscapes. This is ideal for hikers seeking a less technical but rewarding summit. This trek follows a scenic central trail as it takes you through valleys, bamboo zones, spectacular ridgelines, and more. This tour provides a rich mix of adventure, nature, and culture.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Head to Nyakalengija gate, head to Nyabitaba hut
Begin the journey from either Fort Portal or Kasese and head to Nyakalengija gate, one of the entry points of Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The hike begins with registration, briefing, and hiring of Porters to help in carrying extra luggage. The hike will begin by passing the local communities and cultivated farmlands before entering the montane forest. In the forest, expect to meet wildlife such as vervet monkeys, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, and many more species. The trails will end at Nyabitaba hut, 2,651 meters, where you will spend a night.
Day 2: Hike to Guy Yeoman Camp
Have breakfast and then proceed with the hike to Guy Yeoman camp, the trail first descends to cross Mubuku River and then starts ascending through the bamboo forest. As you gain elevation, the breathtaking views keep changing into a heather zone, rich with mosses and hanging lichens. Cross the Kichuchu Bridge and rest at Kichuchu rock before arriving at Guy Yeoman camp located at 3,505 meters above sea level for your night stay.
Day 3: Trek to Lake Kitandara hut
Trek to Lake Kitandara hut after breakfast, as the trail ascends into a boggy section and grasslands typically of the alpine zone. Pass by the Bujongolo rock shelter, historically known as one of the early base camps for early explorers. The trail proceeds to fresh fields where you get the first glimpse of towering Rwenzori peaks. Find yourself at Lake Kitandara, located at 4,023 meters above sea level.
Day 4: Hike to Weismann Peak and back to Lake Kitandara camp
This is the day that highlights the safari as you wake up early and hike to the summit of Weismann Peak. The trail is through rugged alpine zones filled with giant groundsel and lobelia plants. The final push involves scrambling over the rocks and navigating through tussock grasses. At the summit, be rewarded with a great panoramic view of Mt Stanley and Mt Baker. After taking photos, descend back to the Lake Kitandara camp for your dinner.
Day 5: Descend to Guy Yeoman Camp
The return Journey begins as you retrace your steps back to Guy Yeoman camp. Enjoy the fresh fields as the trail descends gradually through familiar alpine and heather zones, and this offers a very different perspective of the terrain you had seen the previous days. Arrive at the camp and enjoy dinner.
Day 6: Descend to Nyakalengija gate, transfer to Fort Portal or Kampala
Descend more to Nyakalengija gate as you pass through the montane forest while watching animals and birds such as turacos, vervet monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed, olive baboons, and many more. Meet the driver guide and transfer back to the agreed-upon point.
