Lake Rweteera

The Rweteera crater lake is found in Rweteera Village in the southern part of Kabarole district in western Uganda. This is among the numerous crater lakes and is situated just 22 kilometers south of Fort Portal. It is only a 28-minute drive. The destination is situated just less than 15 kilometers from Kibale National Park. Lake Nyabikera is the highlight of this place and can be explored for its beauty and surroundings.

What tourist activities should to do at Lake Rweteera?

Hiking tours

This offers an intimate connection with nature, is a chance to explore Lake Rweteera on foot. You will get clear views of the lake and the lush greenery around. Photography is almost mandatory since you will need the cute photos for your memories. Walking along trails with a local guide, you will see plenty of scenes and wildlife. The wildlife includes birds, butterflies, and numerous small mammal species. You can see the silhouette of the Rwenzori ranges.

Community visits

These offer valuable insight into the homesteads surrounding Lake Rweteera and other communities. During a homestead visit, you get to experience the daily lives of the people, including their warm hospitality. Visitors get to enjoy witnessing and hearing about traditional lifestyles, farming practices, culinary delights, and family structures. People living here are mostly Batooro or the Bakiiga who migrated from their home districts to settle here.

Coffee experience

This is a truly unmissable experience where you will get to taste freshly brewed coffee. Explore a coffee garden and take plenty of photos. During this experience, you gain knowledge about how coffee is grown, harvested, roasted, and ground. Get the chance to buy some of the coffee to take back home. This also aims to support local livelihoods so as to improve their standards of living.

Local beer and gin tasting

This is a chance to taste banana beer and gin produced locally by the locals. You will also get demonstrations on how the beer and gin are produced from organic bananas grown in the gardens of the surrounding villages. You will also buy some of the alcohol for your consumption while exploring other parts of Uganda. Again, your support through purchasing is key to local community livelihood enhancement.

Birdwatching

It is a great time to identify different bird species that can also be seen in the nearby Kibale National Park. Come with your pair of binoculars and a camera to observe and take photos of the bird species. These include the great blue turaco and others.

Handicraft making

Which is one of the most enriching experiences while touring the Rweteera crater lake. You witness and get practical skills on how to make handmade local art through basket weaving, beadwork, and others. This offers great insight into the community’s pride in preserving traditional skills. And besides interacting with the local artisans, you also get the chance of purchasing some pieces as mementos.

How to travel?

Traveling to Lake Rweteera is so easy, at least with Standard Safaris. You get there only by either road or air transport. For a seamless road trip from Kampala, you will drive westwards to the lake in Rweteera via Mityana, Mubende, and Fort Portal. This is a 304-kilometer scenic journey that takes between 6 to 7 hours. There are different types of vehicles that you can select to travel in. We have the 4X4 safari jeeps, SUVs, Sedans, 4X4 safari vans, and others.

The air transport option is provided by AeroLink Uganda from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese Airstrip. These are scheduled domestic flights that take only 1 hour and 15 minutes every day. The beauty of air transportation is that you get aerial views of western Uganda throughout the journey. But you will reach Lake Rweteera by ground transportation from the airstrip. This takes 1 hour and 15 minutes on our 4X4 safari jeep or any other car of your choice.

When to travel?

Travel to the crater lake in Rweteera on any day of the year, with no exception. This is because it is open and available for exploration throughout all seasons. Regarding seasons, the dry season offers perfect weather conditions for exploring the crater lake of Rweteera. The precipitation is lower during this time, thus enabling non-stop tour experiences. With lower chances of rainfall, moving around the lake is easier because the ground is less muddy. Normally, the dry season occurs from June to August and from December to February.

We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. Just look for the guy with a big smile and big heart:)

We recently embarked on a safari adventure with Standard Safaris in Uganda, which was truly exceptional. Our guide, Yonah, was outstanding - his kindness, knowledge, and discretion significantly enhanced our experience. He was the heart of our trip.

We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Coleb delivered on everything that was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

The car provided was in great condition and our driver Meddy went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed, and had the best possible time. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. All local services were inlcuded in (reasonable) price that we agreed, so there was no need to worry about payments during the 6 day trip. Also Standard Safaris agreed took care about safety and security by helping us organize armed ranger while in the park.

The whole trip was hassle-free and smooth. We saw amazing wildlife in Queen Elizabeth NP, took in the sights of Rwanda and Burundi, and made lifelong memories.

Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. We had done a lot of research and had an itinerary in mind and Coleb helped us to put everything together to make this happen for a very reasonable price.  On the trip we had a private vehicle for the whole tour which was exactly what we wanted. Bryan was our driver and an amazing guide - really friendly and knowledgable, working hard to find the things that we wanted to see and quickly understanding what was of interest to us/how much information to give.

The company has very courteous tour guides with wide knowledge of fauna and frola in the whole of East Africa.
The choice of safari Lodges is good with first class treatment.
Game drive security is assured.
Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.
Everything was arranged and booked perfectly by Standard Safaris.
The owner, Coleb was always helpful whenever we needed to ask questions about this gorilla safari in Uganda and beyond.
It was a complex expedition but Standard safaris and Coleb made it look amazingly easy.

This is so far the best gorilla trekking company in Uganda, and africa, by far. I had a wonderful time with Standard Safaris as a solo traveler.
My guide was excellent and our safari planner, Coleb was quick with responses and the prices were very friendly.
