History of Tooro Kingdom
The Tooro kingdom traces its roots to the early 19th century, when Prince Kaboyo Olimi I, the son of the Bunyoro king, established an independent kingdom around the 1830s. Over time, the Tooro kingdom developed a district identity, a language known as Rutoro, and royal customs centered on the Omukama (a king).
Like other kingdoms in Uganda, Tooro’s political authority was abolished in 1967 during the Uganda constitutional changes. It was then restored in 1993, and this time with a cultural rather than political role. Today, the kingdom’s monarch is King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, celebrated globally for becoming a king as a child in the 1990s and guarding Tooro’s property until today. By use of road, connect to Fort Portal using the Kampala-Mityana-Mubende highway, a journey covering 323.6 kilometers, taking about 5 to 6 hours’ drive. One can also opt for air transport. There are scheduled and charter flights operated by Aerolink from Entebbe/Kajjansi to Kasese, taking about 1-2 hours with a great aerial view. Have a scenic drive from Kasese town to Fort Portal, taking about 2 hours.
