Uganda offers some of the most memorable combined chimpanzee habituation and gorilla habituation tours in Africa. Visitors accompany researchers and habituators into the forest to participate in the process of acclimating semi-habituated chimpanzees/gorillas to human presence. Moreover, the visitors will safely observe the primates without altering their wild behaviors.
How are chimpanzee or gorilla habituation tours done in Uganda?
A habituation tour starts at around 6:30 am. This is after a short briefing at the park/forest. Visitors, together with researchers, armed rangers, and experienced park guides, move together into the forest to track a semi-habituated chimpanzee/gorilla group. The magic of the habituation experience, compared to chimp/gorilla tracking, is that you get to spend 4 hours with the primates.
Watching the chimpanzee troop or gorilla group during the habituation tour has a lot of advantages compared to the tracking tours. Firstly, you get to see the primates in their raw, natural behaviors as they are still getting used to human presence. You gain deeper insight into the science of the primates as you interact with the researchers who are studying them.
Fewer visitors are allowed for both chimpanzee and gorilla habituation experiences. This offers more intimate encounters than gorilla trekking tours. This is a chance for visitors who love quieter and more personalized experiences to enjoy the tour.
Where to do combined Uganda chimpanzee and gorilla habituation experiences?
Gorilla habituation experiences in Uganda are only done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s Rushaga sector. Most Uganda chimpanzee habituation experiences are done in Kibale National Park. You can also do a chimpanzee habituation experience in Budongo Forest Reserve. These destinations offer unique experiences that will leave a lasting impression on the visitors.

The price of the Uganda chimpanzee habituation experience per person per day is broken down as follows,

Also, each price includes park entrance and guiding fees. The cost of a chimpanzee habituation experience in Budongo Forest is quite different. Each Ugandan is charged only USD 65, each foreign resident, USD 100, and each foreign non-resident, USD 150.
When to travel for combined chimpanzee habituation and gorilla habituation?
Chimpanzee or gorilla habituation experiences in Uganda are available throughout the year. Traveling in the dry season, however, offers comparably better experiences compared to the wet seasons. This is due to the cool atmospheric weather, low rainfall patterns, and less dense undergrowth.
From June to August, both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Kibale National Park experience dry seasons. There is another relatively dry period from December to February. Moving in the forests during these months is much easier because the trails are less muddy or less slippery. But this period falls in the peak of tourism, so you face stiff competition to acquire permits. The solution to this is to purchase your permit at least 3 months before the tour.
How to travel?
Travelling for combined chimpanzee habituation and gorilla habituation is possible with both air and road transportation. Rushaga sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is 477 kilometers from Kampala city via Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale. Duration of travel is between 9 to 10 hours. Meanwhile, Kibale National Park is situated 276 kilometers from Kampala, and the drive typically takes between 5 to 6 hours. You pass through Mityana and Mubende.
Traveling by road from Kampala to the Kichumbanyobo gate, where you will connect to Budongo Forest, is around 238 kilometers. This scenic drive takes between 4 to 5 hours via Masindi. By air, you will board a domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport to Pakuba airstrip. This takes only 1 hour and 15 minutes. Air transportation is also offered to either Kibale or Bwindi National Parks.
A domestic flight takes 1 hour and 15 minutes from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip. This is the nearest airstrip to the Rushaga sector. Traveling to Kibale National Park by air requires you to board a direct flight from Entebbe to Kasese Airstrip. This is the nearest airport to Kibale National Park. However, upon arrival at the mentioned airstrips, you will be transported by road to any of the destinations.
