Kayaking in Uganda

Kayaking in Uganda

Kayaking on the mighty Nile River in Jinja, Uganda, is a thrilling way of taking your adventure to the next level. As you are surrounded by the serene beauty of the Nile, you will paddle through the thrilling rapids and tranquil stretches. The latter parts are where the water is calmer due to little or no turbulence. Apart from the flat-water kayaking, kayakers must be at least 12 years old to enjoy this adventure. Some kayaking operators set the minimum age requirement at 14 years or 15, depending on the intensity of the rapids.

How is it done?

You will start with meeting the kayaking guide/instructor for orientation. They also provide the kayaking equipment and safety regulations and rules to follow. Then you will move to the starting point of the adventure along the Nile River. This is either near Lake Victoria at the source of the Nile or near the former Bujagali Falls. Get into your kayak and start kayaking downstream. There will be a designated endpoint. Kayakers have a wide range of options for this adventure. Among them are,

Full day Tandem kayaking

Which offers the opportunity for visitors to paddle the water rapids in a pair while in a double-seater kayak. One person (mostly the visitor) sits in the front, and the other (mostly the instructor) sits at the back. Both novices and seasoned kayakers can enjoy this one. The latter can be under the guidance of an expert instructor, who will help in case the person flips. Kayaking as a team offers an exhilarating experience, especially when tackling world-class grade 5 rapids. This makes the adventure more adrenaline-pumping.

Full day white water kayaking

This is also for both novices and confident kayakers and offers a chance to pick your own route for kayaking. But you will first start, under the instructor, kayaking on the calm waters. This is to prove that you will handle the grade 5 rapids in the afternoon. Then you will go for the white-water trip, also while still under the watchful eye of the instructor. For novices, the instructor will have to offer advice on how to enter and get out of the kayak. The instructor will also offer advice regarding how to navigate the rapids. Practicing the best strokes you will employ is key while still on calm waters.

Half-day white water kayaking

Is a thrilling kayaking adventure that is offered to both novices and seasoned kayakers on a short tour. This is a more flexible kayaking adventure since you will kayak on the Nile River for a limited time. Regardless of this being done for half a day, it is guaranteed to be a thriller. If you are a novice, you will be paired with an experienced instructor on a sit-on-top kayak. You will head straight to the white waters to enjoy the thrill of the rapids without doing the calm water kayaking.

Flat water kayaking

Might not be as thrilling as the first 3, but at least this experience offers a relaxed way of exploring the Nile River. This is done on a sit-on-top kayak, along with a guide who will introduce you to various unique aquatic bird species. You can enjoy a cold drink while on a flat-water kayaking experience on the Nile River. While viewing the serenity of the Nile River at your own pace, you have the opportunity to do a sundowner. Novices and seasoned kayakers of age 5 and above can enjoy flat water kayaking.
