A 4 days Bwindi gorilla habituation safari from Kigali can only be experienced in Uganda. To do this, you track a semi-habituated gorilla family in the wild to spend time in their presence. Unlike a gorilla trekking experience that offers only 1 hour to view the gorillas, the habituation experience takes 4 hours. Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable NP-Rushaga

Our driver meets you at your preferred location within Kigali City. A transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda happens. Rushaga sector is around 171 kilometers from Kigali City. The scenic drive offers distinct panoramic views of hills and greenery. Stop at at Gatuna border crossing to sort out immigration requirements. Proceed for enroute lunch in Kabale district. Arrive safely at Rushaga where you will check in at your lodge.

Rushaga sector is the only place where you can enjoy a gorilla habituation experience. This is one of the 4 gorilla sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo are the other 3. However, Rushaga has the most numbers of habituated gorilla families, to boast the best gorilla trekking site. Enjoy the rest of the day as you acclimate to the calm atmosphere at your lodge. Meanwhile, dinner is available in the restaurant. Have it and a comfortable stay afterwards.

Day 2: Gorilla habituation in Rushaga Sector

Early in the morning get warm breakfast before heading to the Rushaga gate. Before 6:30 a.m. you will receive a short briefing before the search for the semi-habituated gorilla family inside the forest. Researchers and habituators will be available and you will have to accompany them via the gorilla trails. After the gorilla family, is found, stay close and watch them for even up to 4 hours.

Take photos of the primates and highlight their expressive behaviors. Get as much knowledge as possible from the experts whose research is on the gorillas. After all these return for a short debriefing where you started the trek. Your driver comes to you and takes you back to your lodge for a peaceful relaxation. Enjoy the rest of the day at your lodge. In the evening there is delicious, prepared at the restaurant. Eat your share and enjoy an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and boat ride

After breakfast and check out of the lodge in the morning, the driver takes you to Lake Bunyonyi. The latter is just 108.4 kilometers to the southeast of the Rushaga headquarters. Check in at your prebooked lodge and relax. Do a peaceful boat ride on the lake in the afternoon. This is not only for relaxation but a chance to clearly view the 29 Islands that float on Lake Bunyonyi. These include Akampene, Bushara, Bwama, Nyugeera and Kyahugye etc.

Learn about what makes the lake so unique. Lake Bunyonyi is among the deepest lakes in Africa. It was formed over 18,000 years ago and is now locally known as ‘place of many little birds.’ Exit the boat and explore one of the Islands like Bwama to view zebras, impalas, Uganda kobs and waterbucks etc. The locals who live welcome you to interact with them. Learn about their way of life. A lot of birds found in the islands can be spotted, even while on a boat ride. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Transfer back to Kigali. End of safari

Start your last day of the safari with a delightful breakfast and a sense of wonder. After check out of your lodge set out to Kigali City southwards. During this 107.7-kilometer trip, you will cross into Rwanda through the Gatuna border. Enjoy enroute lunch in Kigali City. We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. Just look for the guy with a big smile and big heart:)

We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Coleb delivered on everything that was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

The car provided was in great condition and our driver Meddy went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed, and had the best possible time. Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.

This is so far the best gorilla trekking company in Uganda, and africa, by far. I had a wonderful time with Standard Safaris as a solo traveler.
