Abseiling in Sipi Falls is among the major tourist activities done on this side of the country. Abseiling is a unique experience and is not usually done in many areas or destinations across the country. Uganda’s unique wonders and activities seem to be endless, as each destination brings new and exciting adventures. This is the case with abseiling in Sipi Falls, as this adventure is unique to Sipi.

Abseiling is an adrenaline-rush experience that allows visitors to safely descend a steep vertical slope using ropes and harnesses, as they control the speed of the descent. To give you a clear picture of abseiling, take the example of workers on a tall building descending on ropes or cables. However, in this case, visitors descend the cliff of Sipi Falls under the splash of the waterfalls while enjoying the beautiful scenic views.

This adventurous activity of abseiling is very surreal, with little experience required to embark on it. Meaning even a first-timer with zero abseiling experience can take on this adventure. Abseiling in Sipi Falls is not like any other experience, as it adds a touch of adventure, and the falls make the experience more thrilling and exciting. This is without mentioning the epic scenic views of the surrounding environment that add the icing to the cake.

Where is Abseiling in Sipi Falls done from?

It is no brainer that by now you can tell that this abseiling experience is designated for only Sipi Falls, and not anywhere else across the country, at least for now. Putting that aside, Sipi Falls are situated in Mbale District, eastern Uganda. Sipi Falls, together with Mount Elgon, have long been the faces of tourism in Mbale, still today, even with the establishment of a zoo in Mbale by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

For this abseiling activity to take place, there has to be a cliff. Therefore, what better place to put abseiling than Sipi Falls, as it is located on a vertical cliff. The cliff of Sipi Falls, where abseiling takes place, is approximately 100 meters tall. Such a height is reasonably enough for visitors to have a memorable abseiling adventure.

It is also important to note that Sipi Falls is a collection of three waterfalls, each varying in height. All these waterfalls are fed by the Sipi River that flows from the slopes of Mountain Elgon. The famous and highly sought-after attraction is the main fall, which is about 100 meters in height.

Ngasire Waterfall, at 85 meters in height, also offers an exciting cave experience behind the curtain of water. This fall is also known as Upper Falls, and this is where the river is at its strongest. At 75 meters tall, Simba Waterfall offers epic views of the surrounding farmlands and jungle.

How is abseiling done?

Abseiling is done using anchored ropes on top of the cliff, and a visitor walks backwards to the vertical drop. Using ropes fixed with a figure-eight metal in a harness locked in place with a carabiner, a visitor leans backwards as they descend the cliff. They can control the speed of the descent using a friction metal that is attached to the harness. The ropes are usually anchored to the solid rock on top of the cliff.

Visitors position themselves in a certain posture with knees slightly bent, hands tightly gripping the ropes, and the friction metal and harness. By leaning backwards, visitors can drop slowly and gently, using their legs while pushing against the solid cliff. Although it sounds a bit challenging, it is actually easy. Abseiling is also safe as the secured ropes help to keep the visitor positioned for the descent. There is also an additional friction knot fastened below the main harness as a backup for an emergency brake.

How much does abseiling in Sipi Falls cost?

The cost for abseiling in Sipi Falls is categorized by variations in clients’ origin and nationality. These categories are foreign non-residents, foreign residents, and nationals or East Africans. Categorizing the cost in such variations ensures equal costing or pricing and constant maintenance of the destination. The cost for abseiling in Sipi Falls is as follows;

• International clients or foreign non-residents – USD 50
• Foreign residents – USD 40
• East Africans, including Ugandan citizens – UGX 150,000

The above cost excludes other additional costs, like the Sipi Falls community entry fees, which also go hand in hand with the hike to the starting point of the abseiling activity at the top of the falls. Other additional costs can be renting the abseiling gear if a client does not have any, among other costs. Although such costs can be very cheap, with an average of about USD 20 or 30, they are important to the locals. This is because it is a major source of livelihood and also a form of responsible travel and a practise of sustainable tourism.

What is the best time for abseiling in Sipi Falls?

Given the outdoor nature of the abseiling activity in Sipi Falls, the dry season is the best time. The dry season is a periodic season of constant dry weather conditions of prolonged dryness as a result of little or no rainfall received. The cliff of Sipi Falls, where abseiling takes place, is solid rock and is not affected much by any weather, although it may be slippery in the wet season.

The lush greenery around the falls is affected by the dry season, making it sparse and easing navigation through the trails to the top of the cliff. A clear, dry, sunny day is also a gem for photography. The climate in Uganda is, however, very unpredictable and can change significantly in any season. This is why abseiling in Sipi Falls during the wet season is not ruled out. The lush surrounding vegetation is even more beautiful in the wet season with the dense, lush greenery.

What to pack for abseiling?

Abseiling in Sipi Falls requires technical equipment for the sole purpose of this activity. It is not a question of may or may not have, but must have this specific equipment to take on this activity. The abseiling equipment is not just important for the success of this activity but also for the safety of the client. Items to pack for abseiling include the following.

• Helmet

• Hiking boots/shoes
• Carabiners
• Waterproof clothing like moisture-wicking pants and shirts
• Accessories like sunscreen and insect repellent

How to get there?

As mentioned earlier, Sipi Falls is situated in Mbale District, eastern Uganda. Accessing Sipi Falls for abseiling can be by both road and air, depending on the preference of the visitor. Sipi Falls is located over 290 kilometers from the capital, Kampala, meaning it takes about 5-6 hours to get there by road using the Kampala-Jinja-Mbale highway.

There are no airfields in Mbale District, but that does not mean Sipi Falls cannot be accessed by air. Visitors can board a scheduled domestic charter flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Soroti Airport for just an hour. This airport is situated about 2 hours from Sipi Falls by road, thus reducing the travel time.
