Gorilla trekking is an ultimate wildlife experience on earth because unlike the other gorilla species like Eastern lowland gorillas that can be seen in zoos, mountain gorillas can’t survive in zoos, they only survive in high altitude areas. This is why they are a special species not found anywhere else but only in three East African Countries – Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. In Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Gorilla trekking experiences are similar in all the three countries; however, the gorilla trekking permits vary according to country, Rwanda is the most expensive destination for gorilla trekking as the permits go for $1,500 and Democratic Republic of Congo offers the cheapest permits which cost only $400 whereas Uganda’s gorilla trekking permit are at an average price of $700. Uganda on the other hand has the highest number of gorilla families available for trekking due to the large numbers of gorillas available, over half of the 1,063 gorillas’ global population is found in Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks combined.
Mountain gorillas live in areas with high altitude between 2300 meters to 4500 meters above sea level, just as their name sounds, they live in mountainous areas. Individuals who are physically fit are able to overcome the challenge of climbing to the high areas in order to meet the magnificent species. Therefore as long as one is physically able they can visit the gorillas, however those who can’t make it to the high altitude areas, there are gorilla groups that stay close to the starting point and these can be assigned to such special groups.
Gorilla trekking for the senior trekkers.
Individuals above the age of 15 are allowed to carry out gorilla trekking, studies show that most of the trekkers are above the age of 40. However, some individuals are discouraged in taking part in this experience because they are limited by physical ability or age as they feel the activity requires lots of effort and therefore they might not make it to the high altitude areas.
A 94 years’ old lady in 2013 made a record that hasn’t yet been broken as being the oldest person to successfully trek gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Therefore not even age can limit you from exploring the beautiful flora and fauna you are likely to come across along you way to meet the primates.
Since gorilla trekking permits are limited and given out according to first come basis, senior trekkers who would love to go for shorter treks should book early. You could always inform your tour operator about your physical ability such that they help book you the perfect trek and prepare the necessary equipment and arrangements with the park management as required.
Available trekking options for the elderly and seniors.
Shorter treks.
This involves visiting the nearest gorilla group, this can be assigned only when a special request has been made either by yourself or a local trusted tour operator. These groups are easier to find and since the rangers are aware of where to find them since they closely monitor them though the gorillas are allowed to freely move throughout the different sections of the park.
When allocated to the nearest group, you will walk for a shorter period of time like 30 minutes before encountering them and they are usually located at the lower altitude areas.
Hiring Porters.
Though everyone trekking is advisable to hire a porter who helps with carrying your language and also supporting you throughout the whole trek, some people who are strong enough don’t require porters if they can manage carrying their own language.
For the elderly, porters can be hired to carry your property as you hike lightly and therefore won’t get tired easily no matter the length of the trek.
Hiring a Sedan chair.
This is a metallic seat with a seat belt; one sits in the chair and then carried around the park. It is a suitable option for those who can’t walk and also the disabled. Therefore anyone can visit the mountain gorillas regardless of their ability to get there. The chair can be got at between $300-$500 from your hotel, park headquarters or through your tour operator.
Best time to do gorilla trekking for seniors.
All the gorilla trekking destinations are open all year round and even on public holidays, if you are bothered by the rains and mud, then it’s best to visit during the dry seasons that run from December to March and June to October.
