How to Do Gorilla Habituation?
Different from a gorilla trek, a habituation experience starts at 6:30 a.m. However, similar to a gorilla trek, you must attend briefing, organized by the ranger guides. Once the message about a successful gorilla habitation experience is clear enough, meet the tracker and rangers. Along with them, accompany researchers or conservationists to locate a semi-habituated gorilla family inside the forest. Follow their trails to discover their fresh dung, knuckle prints, and nest sites etc. until found.

In the forest it might take you seconds, minutes or even a couple of hours to find the gorilla family. But, once you find them, time spent in their presence is significantly more than that of the gorilla trek. Actually, it is 4 hours before you leave them alone and return to the trailhead. This is sufficient time to watch gorilla behavior in their authentic habitat. Besides, you have a lot to learn about them from the team of researchers who have moved with you.

Gorilla permits are offered for purchase every single day of the year. This implies that if lucky, you might do a gorilla habituation experience the week after you have purchased your permit. But, because all gorilla tours attract larger than normal numbers of visitors, book a gorilla permit in advance. At least 3 months in advance is recommended for this, especially if you would want to see the gorillas in the peak seasons. These run from June to August and December to February.
In the low season, usually in the wet season of the year, gorilla permits are acquired much easier. This season is from March to May, and then October to November. While the peak season falls in Uganda’s dry season, the low season is experienced in the wet season. It implies that the wet season offers less stiff competition for all those who would want to buy a permit. Nevertheless, prioritize the purchase in advance to avoid inconveniences.
