Lake Chahafi is a beautiful crater lake situated in Kisoro district, southwestern Uganda. The crater lake is among several found in the Kigezi region that can be explored before and after a gorilla trek. Lake Chahafi has a twin crater lake, known as Kayumbu, separated by a hill. Exploring this unique geological wonder offers a unique opportunity to spot diverse wildlife, magnificent scenery, and the habitats of Uganda.
Brief history of Lake Chahafi?
Lake Chahafi offers a unique colonial era history that has to be heard to be appreciated. One of the most emotionally powerful stories to hear while around the destination happened during World War 1. This concerns the British and Belgian joint forces who had established a base on the Lake Chahafi shores in 1914. They were opposing the Germans, who also wanted to control Kigezi. More knowledge on this can be obtained from the local communities living around the lake.
Another interesting piece of knowledge from the history of Lake Chahafi concerns a man called Katuregye. Before 1914, Katuregye, with his subjects, tried to oppose the British imperialists. Their conviction in the Nyabingi religious movement instilled in them the confidence that spiritual powers would help them defeat the British. Unfortunately, their attempts did not go as they expected, but their story left a powerful and enduring impression. This and more can be gotten from the locals.
What to see?
Lake Chahafi is situated in a place rich with biodiversity and plenty of geographical features. Regarding fauna, Lake Chahafi has plenty of birds to see. These include the African jacanas, grey crowned cranes, malachite kingfishers, black crakes, and swamp flycatchers, among others. The scenery is fantastical and offers views of rolling hills, clear lake water, lush vegetation, silhouettes of the Virunga volcanoes, and others. There are also fish species living in the lake.

Birding is a key activity for all avian enthusiasts and ornithologists. There are plenty of birds that can be identified or discovered at Lake Chahafi. A pair of binoculars and a camera should be available to both see and photograph as many bird species as possible.

Where you can capture stunning, dramatic landscapes, still waters, and plenty of vibrant reflections. The avian population, insects, and surrounding vegetation provide a rich, beautiful backdrop for nature photography.

How to get there?
Getting to Lake Chahafi is done by either road or air transport. A road trip to Lake Chahafi starting from Kampala passes via Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale. This covers 486 kilometers. Air transportation, which is a relatively faster mode of transport, can be enjoyed from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro airstrip. Scheduled flights are offered daily by AeroLink Uganda. The journey to Kisoro Airstrip takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. The rest of the journey to the lake is only 14.2 kilometers by road in our comfortable 4X4 safari land cruiser or any vehicle of your choice. Aerial views towards the southwest of Uganda are guaranteed.
When to go?
Any day of the year. Lake Chahafi can be explored year-round. At Standard Safaris, we can explore Lake Chahafi with you in both the dry and wet seasons. But we recommend that you visit the destination during the dry season. Unlike the wet season, weather conditions during the dry season are quite favorable. Precipitation is low, and the air is quite warm and dry. These conditions cause the terrain to stay firmer and less muddy, making it easier to explore on foot.
At Lake Chahafi, the dry season often occurs from June to August. However, December to February is also quite dry. But, wet seasons at Lake Chahafi also have their merits, such as lush scenery and plenty of bird species. This is good for photography, birding, and enjoying more intimate tours. The wet seasons are known for heavy rains and cooler temperatures. Wet months at Lake Chahafi run from March to May and October to November.
