Lake Kyaninga was formed over thousands of years through a process of intensive volcanic and geological processes that shifted the earth, forming a crater that stretches several kilometers in deep. As the weather shifts over time and prolonged rains take a toll on this crater, it fills up with rainwater, leading to the formation of Lake Kyaninga. Accustomed to the local traditions, this lake was named by the locals from their local Tooro language ’kuninga’, which means to spoil or pamper. This is because the lake provided the locals with incredibly clean water, as some drank it fresh from the lake, thus saying the lake was pampering them. This later led the lake to be renamed Lake Kyaninga, meaning a place of pampering. The lake’s meandering shape extends in a catchment area of over 42 hectares.
