Mount Biega in Congo

Mountain Biega is a dormant volcano standing at 2,790 meters above sea level. It is part of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Biega is found in the Mitumba mountains along the Western Rift Valley also known as the Albertine Rift. Mount Biega is rich in biodiversity with numerous mammal, bird, and plant species. Mammals include the iconic eastern lowland gorillas, bush buffaloes, giant forest hogs, bush elephants, bongos, owl-faced monkeys, and olive baboons. The vegetation is comprised of mainly tropical and montane vegetation among many others.

Tracking the Eastern Lowland Gorillas

An Eastern lowland gorilla trekking tour is the highlight for any visitor to Kahuzi-Biega National Park. You can go for this remarkable adventure before or after exploring Mount Biega. Kahuzi-Biega National Park is the only place in the world where you can track the eastern lowland gorillas in their natural habitat. Once you encounter a habituated gorilla family, you are allowed an hour in their presence. The gorilla trekking tour takes 4-6 hours depending on location. You must acquire a gorilla permit before you participate in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure that starts at around 7:00 am at the park offices. You will be guided by well-trained ranger guides and armed guards as you follow specific gorilla trails in the forest. A maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family per day are expected to participate.

Hiking tour

A guided hiking tour on Mount Biega is one of the key events any visitor would love to experience in this place. The hiking adventure takes a total duration of around 7 hours to and from the Kahuzi-Biega National Park headquarters. You will begin with a session by the park wardens who will brief you about the hiking rules. Then you will be led along the hiking trails by experienced ranger guides until you reach the summit of Mount Biega. This ascension takes around 4 hours, and then you will descend back to the headquarters for 3 hours. The adventure offers other great opportunities for spotting a variety of mammal and bird species. These include monkeys, rodents, chimpanzees, and others. You will also get a unique perspective of observing the beautiful mountainous landscape and tropical rainforest in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Additionally, views of Lake Kivu can be obtained from the summit of Mount Biega.

Birdwatching tours

With over 400 recorded bird species in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Mount Biega is a bird haven with a lot of rare species including at least 40 Albertine endemics. Birders should anticipate spotting the Congo peafowl, African green broadbill Rockefeller’s sunbird, Rwenzori turaco, and Shelley’s crimson wing among others. There are several trails that a visitor will use on the exciting guided birding excursion on Mount Biega.

Optimal Time to go to Mount Biega

Visitors can go to mountain Biega for a tour experience throughout the year. The dry season from December to February and June to August offers dry and warm weather conditions in this place. These subsequently cause drier hiking trails and less dense vegetation cover on the mountain. During the dry season, rainfall experienced is minimal therefore, a visitor can participate in an uninterrupted tour experience. Hence making the season the best for some travelers.

You can also have a fun time at Mount Biega during the rainy season, which runs from March to May, and during October and November. During this season, Mount Biega experiences a lot of rain thus making the tour experience more adventurous. This is because of how challenging it is to navigate the muddy terrain. Additionally, there are more bird species on Mount Biega during the wet season than in the dry season. Therefore, bird lovers and ornithologists will have a great time.

How to reach Mount Biega in the Congo?

Reaching Mount Biega is done via Rwanda, especially after your arrival flight at the Kigali International Airport. From Kigali the capital city of Rwanda, you will be transferred by road transport across the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo via Bukavu. This is a 308-kilometer scenic journey taking around 7-8 hours.

What to pack for the Mount Biega Tour?

A pair of hiking shoes with good traction. Gaiters are also handy to protect your shoes from stone particles, mad, and water among others.
Light clothes (Long-sleeved shirt and a pair of long trousers) for comfort as well as to cover your body against insect bites and thorns

We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. Just look for the guy with a big smile and big heart:)

We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Coleb delivered on everything that was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

The car provided was in great condition and our driver Meddy went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed, and had the best possible time. Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. We had done a lot of research and had an itinerary in mind and Coleb helped us to put everything together to make this happen for a very reasonable price.  On the trip we had a private vehicle for the whole tour which was exactly what we wanted. Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.
