Mount Kahuzi in Congo

Mount Kahuzi is a dormant volcano that stands at an elevation of 3,308 meters above sea level. It is situated in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Kahuzi is close to Lake Kivu within the Albertine Rift and is the highest peak of the Mitumba Mountain ranges. Mount Kahuzi is a biodiverse rich ecosystem endowed with numerous vegetation types, dominated by tropical lowland, bamboo, swamp, and Afromontane forests. Other flora species include Albizia, Cyperus, and Macaranga among others. The key fauna species on Mount Kahuzi is the endemic Eastern lowland gorilla. There are over 270 individuals, thus Kahuzi-Biega National Park has one of the world’s highest numbers of these primate species.

Besides the famous Eastern lowland gorillas, Mount Kahuzi comprises various mammals. These include chimpanzees, Ruwenzori horseshoe bats, forest elephants, the Ruwenzori otter shrews, the elusive Mount Kahuzi climbing mice, De Graaff’s soft-furred mice, Kivu shrews, owl-faced monkeys, olive baboons, leopards, giant forest hogs, red-tailed monkeys and giant genets among others. There are numerous bird species in Mount Kahuzi including numerous Albertine endemics. Birds that have been recorded at Mount Kahuzi include the Rwenzori turaco, Kivu ground thrush, collared apalis, handsome francolin, dwarf honeyguide, Ruwenzori nightjar, Kungwe Apalis, and the red-throated alethe among others.

What to do at Mount Kahuzi in the Congo

Mount Kahuzi along with the nearby Mount Biega form the Kahuzi-Biega National Park ecosystem and this place is a tourism hotspot for travelers. Visitors to Mount Kahuzi can engage in the following activities.

Gorilla trekking

The slopes of Mount Kahuzi offer some of the best places on the planet for Eastern lowland gorilla trekking tours. Visitors can enjoy a hiking adventure in the dense jungles to locate a designated habituated gorilla group via gorilla trails. When the group is encountered each of the eight trekkers has a maximum of one hour to observe the unique behavior of the extraordinary apes in their natural homes.

Best time to travel and explore Mount Kahuzi

An exploration of the lovely Mount Kahuzi can be done throughout the year, with your preferences and interests depending on the weather, budget, and wildlife to spot. The dry season is the recommended time to travel for a Mount Kahuzi tour. Mount Kahuzi experiences the dry season from December to February and June to August. The advantage of exploring Mount Kahuzi during this time of the year is that you can hike on dry trails. This is because rainfall is minimal and average temperatures are higher compared to the rainy season. Therefore, navigating the slopes of the forested volcano is less challenging in comparison to the wet seasons. Visibility is also much better with the clear skies and less dense vegetation cover.

The wet season offers more challenging hiking adventures on Mount Kahuzi due to the significantly large amounts of rainfall experienced during that time of year. This leads to slippery slopes and dense vegetation cover thus affecting navigation and access unless you are a daring adventurer. The wet season is experienced from March to May and also from October and November. The time is so special for budget travelers who are awarded discounts on accommodation and some tourist activities. There are more bird species in the wet season than during the dry season thus birders should visit Mount Kahuzi during this time of the year. The wet season is also the low season of tourism therefore you can have an intimate experience in the forest.

What to pack for a tour of Mount Kahuzi

Strong and comfortable walking shoes with an effective grip to move on rough terrain

We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. Just look for the guy with a big smile and big heart:)

We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Coleb delivered on everything that was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.

The car provided was in great condition and our driver Meddy went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed, and had the best possible time. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. All local services were inlcuded in (reasonable) price that we agreed, so there was no need to worry about payments during the 6 day trip. Also Standard Safaris agreed took care about safety and security by helping us organize armed ranger while in the park.

The whole trip was hassle-free and smooth. We saw amazing wildlife in Queen Elizabeth NP, took in the sights of Rwanda and Burundi, and made lifelong memories.

Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. We had done a lot of research and had an itinerary in mind and Coleb helped us to put everything together to make this happen for a very reasonable price.  On the trip we had a private vehicle for the whole tour which was exactly what we wanted. Bryan was our driver and an amazing guide - really friendly and knowledgable, working hard to find the things that we wanted to see and quickly understanding what was of interest to us/how much information to give.

Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.
