Visit the 220 square kilometer Semuliki National Park in Bundibugyo district, western Uganda to tour the Sempaya hot springs. Also known as the Semuliki hot springs, they lie adjacent to the great Ituri forest at the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Sempaya hot springs are named after the Swahili phrase “Sehemu Mbaya’’, which means ‘the difficult.’ The hot springs are composed of 2 distinct springs, the male and female hot springs, separated by a forest path that takes approximately 30 minutes to traverse.
The Sempaya hot springs were formed due to high temperatures in underground rocks, resulting in an upthrust of the earth’s surface. Then the water infiltrates the heated rock and reaches boiling point due to the high temperatures. The heated water is then propelled upward with great pressure, culminating creation of the hot springs. This geological process has endowed the Sempaya hot springs with mesmerizing and therapeutic qualities.
Significance of the Sempaya hot springs at Semuliki National Park
While the aforementioned technical explanation for the origins of the Sempaya hot springs is done by scientists, the adjacent indigenous people of the Bamaga clan share a different perspective. Their folklore tells of the mysterious appearance and disappearance of a man known as Bitente, near the male hot spring. His union with a local woman from their village and subsequent vanishing during a hunting trip became a legend with his spear marking the spot where he vanished now known as the male hot spring reinforced the belief among the Bamaga.
Similarly, his wife’s disappearance near what is now the female hot spring reinforced the belief among the Bamaga people that their male and female ancestors reside beneath these springs. Every year, the Bamaga hold celebrations and perform traditional rituals to honor and appease these ancestral spirits. The female hot spring called Nyasimbi symbolizes the female gods. Here rituals and sacrifices are done to ensure fertility and good health, as they throw coins into the spring while praying for healthy pregnancies. The women pray for smooth delivery while believing the salty water of the springs possesses healing properties for skin ailments. Meanwhile, the Male hot spring Mumbugu is associated with wealth, where men perform rituals to seek favor from the gods.
Besides the cultural significance of the Sempaya hot springs, they are also valuable to researchers who consider it as a laboratory due to its salt deposits that attract various wildlife species. Semuliki National Park can be visited throughout the year, however, the best time to go on a Sempaya hot springs tour is during the dry seasons. These seasons typically occur from December to February and June to August. Also, the dry season offers much better opportunities to participate in other tourist activities besides the hot springs tour. These include birdwatching and nature walks. The trails are more accessible, the vegetation is less dense, and the skies are clear compared to the rainy seasons.
On the other hand, the wet seasons also offer unique experiences on your Sempaya hot springs tour from March to May and September to November. The rains bring luxurious greenery and the chance to see migratory birds as you are enjoying your tour. However, the trails are more challenging to navigate because they might be muddy and slippery.
