History of the Inyambo Cattle?

The Inyambo cattle, like the Kingdom at the time were generally mobile, never having a permanent home until 1898. When the monarchy finally settled in Nyanza, the Inyambo cattle continued serving their purpose of honoring the King during ceremonies. The Inyambo cattle trainers were dedicated to breeding and directing them for royal parades.

The Inyambo Cattle are still bred and groomed to this day, long after the dissolution of the monarchy system in Rwanda in 1962. Witnessing the King’s herd is such a great opportunity. Each of them has a name and their dedicated trainers have to sing to them to ensure they are submissive and peaceful. Their beauty is enhanced with ribbons and jewelry on them.

The Ankole cattle have imposingly long symmetrical white horns that may make them appear frightening. However, they are peaceful cattle that even near you can see as well as get the golden chance of touching. Unlike other cattle, these sacred ones are not bred for beef or milk. Their breeding is fully supported by the Rwanda Agriculture Board.

About the King’s Palace in Nyanza?

The King’s Palace was originally constructed in 1931 by the Belgian colonial masters. This was the royal residence of King Rutara III Rudahigwa. He lived in this residence with a mix of both Rwandan traditional architecture and Western designs until he died in 1953. Now, the King’s Palace Museum is a replica of the traditional King’s thatched hat, shaped like a beehive.

The King’s Palace was opened as a museum in 2008. You will witness plenty of things at the King’s Palace Museum including the Inyambo Cattle.
