Uganda Gorilla Trekking from Fort Portal

Gorilla trekking is one of the most popular tourism activities in Uganda and it involves nature walking, hiking through dense tropical forests, locating and tracking mountain gorillas in their natural habitats.

Mountain gorillas are why Uganda receives so many visitors throughout the year. While there are only a thousand mountain gorillas remaining in the world, Uganda shelters almost half of them, and is the largest host of these primate species among the only three countries that host mountain gorillas.

There are only three destinations that host the only remaining in the wild including Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. All travelers that have been on this once in a lifetime adventure experience highly rate and recommend the activity.

There are only two gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda which are Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park in the southwestern part of Uganda. Bwindi is the largest host of mountain gorillas in Uganda and the entire Virunga region while it remains the best place to sight and encounter these primate species on Uganda Safari tours.

All gorilla trekking activities in Uganda are carried out in two sessions per day, the first session starts off at about 9:00 am in the morning and the last one in the afternoon at around 2:00 pm.

Visitors are limited to a group of eight trekkers only and each group is allocated to track one particular gorilla family and have one one-on-one encounter with these species for one hour only.

HOW MUCH DOES GORILLA TREKKING COST IN UGANDA.

Even though Uganda is the largest host of mountain gorillas and one of the most popular spots for viewing and encountering these gorilla species, the prices of gorilla trekking permits are slightly cheaper compared to its counterpart in Rwanda.

While Rwanda has the most expensive gorilla trekking permits in the Virunga region, Uganda gorilla trekking tickets are slightly cheaper at about $700 for foreign nonresidents, $600 for foreign residents and about Ugandan shillings 250,000 per person for East African residents.

UGANDA GORILLA TREKKING PACKING LIST.

While visitors are in preparation for Uganda gorilla trekking tours, some items are essential and must have to enable smooth and effective running of the world’s most exciting wildlife activity.

Comfortable hiking shoes. Gorilla trekking in Uganda’s gorilla trekking destinations for example in Bwindi national park involves trekking through dense forests and lush vegetation while hiking steep hills as visitors are trying to locate and track the mountain gorillas. Along the way, visitors also tend to experience slippery, hilly and muddy trails that require visitors to put on firm and genuine hiking shoes so they can have the best out of Uganda gorilla trekking tours without complications.

Gorilla trekking permits and all the required documents. This is the most vital part of the packing list for gorilla trekking in Uganda. All visitors and travelers should ensure that they have all the necessary travel documents required to engage in this lifetime activity for example visitor’s passport, visas and gorilla trekking permits. Travelers and visitors will be required to present their gorilla trekking permits and passports at the park’s offices as a must so they can be able to dive into this remarkable activity.

Walking stick and drinking water. For easy hiking on steep hills and getting through the dense vegetation of some gorilla trekking destinations, a walking stick is a must-carry. Visitors can get these walking sticks at a free cost at the park’s office.

Clothing. Tight attire while gorilla trekking can be frustrating so travelers are advised to wear free and breathing clothing so as to avoid fatigue slowing down while on the activity and overall laziness. Gloves, stockings and warm clothing are all necessary especially for the unpredictability of weather.

GORILLA TREKKING FROM FORT PORTAL TOWN TO BWINDI AND MGAHINGA NATIONAL PARK.

Both of Uganda’s popular gorilla trekking destinations are situated in the southwestern part of the country while Fort Portal City is just a few miles away. Visitors and travelers can opt to kick off this activity from Fort Portal town which requires trekkers to spend about two nights in any of the gorilla sectors including Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Buhoma gorilla sector is one of the most visited regions in Bwindi impenetrable national park and shelters the biggest number of habituated gorilla groups.

Visitors can choose their accommodation in any of the nearest accommodation facilities like Bwindi lodge, midrange hotel, and mahogany springs.

Mgahinga is the smallest park in Uganda and shelters only one habituated gorilla family group.

We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.

I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.

If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.

We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.
