How is a white water rafting tour done?

Participants are picked up from their hotels early in the morning, at 6:00am if you stayed in Kampala. The exercise starts with breakfast, and thereafter briefing of the participants on safety, rules and regulations to be followed, as well as the expectations of the activity.

This briefing session is conducted by rafting guides who are experienced and have extensive knowledge about the Nile rapids. Participants are briefed on how to hold the ropes and the right way to flip out of the raft, how to paddle and practice on what to do with a flipped raft.

Participants are advised to remain calm and hold their breath in case they tip over. Participants are advised to carry extra underwear and clothing that can dry fast enough since the activity involves moving into and out of the water. They have to leave their dry clothing behind with the rafting operating staff. Participants are also required to sign forms indicating any illnesses they could be having and this determines whether one is fit for the adventure. People with anemia and hypertension will not be allowed to go rafting. Participants can then choose whether to go rafting through the easy or difficult grades.

River Nile has the easy grade 3 rapids which can be taken on by participants who are not ready or fit for Grade 4 and 5. There is also a slower family float trip through a route away from the rapids that families can follow. Grades 4 and 5, are however reserved for only experienced rafters since these become stronger and quicker as you go downstream.

Visitors are given water proof jackets and helmets, both of which are fastened, set for the adventure to begin, and the rafting is guided by experienced guides. Along the rafting adventure, participants get to tip into and out of the water when they approach a rapid. One is advised to hold onto the ropes or raise their knees to the chest when flipped over.

There are rescue teams that move ahead of the rafters in kayaks and these help rescue participants that flip over. There are also rescue boats to sail back participants that are exhausted and not ready to continue. These boats also carry fruits and snacks which are taken during the breaks in the calm waters between the rapids. After every rapid, the team gets to discuss on which rapid they should take on next.

Interesting, there is a camera team to capture beautiful photos of the participants and the rafting equipment are well maintained to ensure safety.

Throughout the rafting tour, participants get to watch beautiful birds and interact with fishermen and locals along the way. After the activity, a small barbecue with eats and drinks is organized to celebrate and thereafter, participants can then be transported back to their lodges.

While in Jinja, participants can also take part in other activities around the Nile while enjoying the serenity of the river, explore amazing restaurants with rich cuisine and visit craft shops to buy beautiful souvenirs to take back home.
