These are three adventurous days, letting you dive into the thrills of Mountain Nyiragongo. This is one of the greatest magical wonders in Africa. The trip starts and ends in Kigali, transferring through Gisenyi to Congo’s Goma. The trip allows you hike to the top of Nyiragongo Mountain that has erupted more than 30 times in the last 100 years, with most recent eruption in 2002.
TRIP DETAILS.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali city and travel to Goma in DR Congo.
At Kigali international airport, the driver guide will be ready to receive you and brief you about the trip. Depending on the time of arrival, have a city drive through Kigali, visiting the Kigali Genocide memorial site and other museums in the city.
Travel to Goma in DR Congo, passing Gisenyi border point between Conga and Rwanda. Arrival is in the evening for dinner and overnight as you prepare for the next day.
Day 2: Nyiragongo hike.
After breakfast, head to the starting point where you will meet up with the local park ranger for a simple briefing about the hike. Start the hike to the top, it takes about 4 to 6 hours to summit the volcano. This is a thrilling experience that takes you through different vegetation zones, encountering several tree species and wildlife. At the top you are likely to reach in the evening or late afternoon, for a cup of hot coffee, since the temperatures are very low at the top.
Have some relaxation at the cabins, as you wait for dinner, watching the lava lake form a Cob-web like structure, a sight that is never getting off your memory. Dinner and overnight accommodation in the mountain shelters.
Day 3: Descending from Nyiragongo and Departure.
Early morning, after breakfast, start descending down the volcano, back to the starting point and drive back to Kigali. Enjoy the comfortable ride through Rwanda as you head back to the airport for your exit flight.
