In this 6 days cultural tour of South Sudan’s tribes, dive into some of the well-preserved cultures on the African continent. Full itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Juba International Airport.
Upon entering the country through its main gateway, Juba International Airport, our tour guide/driver will escort you in. A brief but insightful briefing will be delivered to provide an overview of how your tour is expected to run. Drive later to the hotel for lunch. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing at your hotel or do an optional exploration tour of the city. Later at dusk, enjoy dinner at the hotel and rest for the night ahead.
Day 2: Travel to Kimatong village to visit Buya / Larim people (6 hours’ drive).
Wake up to a delicious breakfast at your hotel in Juba and drive off to the countryside to the Kimatong village for 6 hours. Enjoy the scenic views of the mountains inhabited by the Buya or Boya people. Explore their unique cultures and traditions of beautiful body scarifications like nose piercings, lips, etc, where a girl with more scars attracts more cows for marriage. Enjoy lunch in the Kimatong village while interacting with the elders of the Buya tribe for an insightful understanding of their culture.
The afternoon is set apart for more adventure across the mountains by interacting with the people who inhabit these slopes. Admire their incredible life of resilience through the harsh weather and terrain of their home. As dusk kicks in, dinner and spend the night camping with the Buya people.
Day 3: Morning experience with Larim and drive to the Lopit hills.
Enjoy a hot cultural breakfast and continue your cultural tour by spending the rest of the morning with the Larim people. Enjoy a unique blend of culture and bravery of the Larim people who wear leopard skins and ostrich feathers. Dive through the generations back, witnessing how cultures have been passed on from generation to generation through entertainment. As you enjoy their traditional dances, attest to their strong ties to their generational forefathers and love for tradition.
This traditional dance will see you off to the Lopit hills after your lunch. Walk with the Lopit people for the remaining half of the day before dusk. Head straight to their traditional healer for a practical lecture on the ancient African way of treating illness. Also, interacting with the rainmaker upon arrival. In addition to culture, admire the beautiful scenery of the Lopit hills.
The Lopit people are traditional cattle keepers, you will have a chance to learn about their cattle and farming practices. Spot the similarity in the language of the Lopit people to their Lotuko brothers and see how all cultures in this country equally bond. Spend the night camping in the Lopit community after dinner.
Day 4: Morning experience with Lopit traditional dances. Drive back to Juba city.
Energize yourself with an early breakfast upon waking up. As you set to leave the Lopit tribe, enjoy a traditional dance from the Lopit people as a farewell entertainment. This will mark the end of your stay with the Lopit people. Drive off back to the capital, Juba, with a short stopover for an en route lunch at Torit Hotel. Check in later in the evening at Hotel Royal Palace/Pyramid Continental in time for dinner and rest.
Day 5: Juba City Tour and drive to Mundari Cattle Camps (3 hours).
After breakfast at your hotel, embark on a city tour of Juba. Visit the various historical sites, like the different monuments that commemorate the top figures who shaped the history of this country. This city tour will bring you up to lunchtime, where you enjoy a delicious local cuisine.
Later in the afternoon, drive to the Mundari cattle camp. You will arrive in time to witness the Mundari cleaning the camp and burning cow dung, preparing for the cattle. As the cattle get closer to the camp, the Mundari usher them in by playing drums in excitement. Join in as the Mundari organize their cattle around the heaps of burning dung to scare away the flies at night. Dinner later and camp near the cattle camps shortly before nightfall.
Day 6: Sunrise experience with Mundari. Transfer back to Juba city. Departure.
Arise with the singing of the early birds in the Mundari cattle camp for breakfast. Witnessing and joining the cattle herding activities with the Mundari, like milking, blowing the cow’s vagina to stimulate it to produce more milk, and cleaning the cattle with burnt dung to get rid of the ticks as they head for grazing. This will be the climax of the cultural tour as you set off for the city.
Drive back to your booked hotel in Juba for lunch. Shower and prepare yourself for the airport, arriving later in time for your departure flight back home.
