TRIP DETAILS
Day 1: Travel to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary by boat
The driver guide picks you from the airport or from the hotel you slept, obviously after breakfast. Head to Entebbe at the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) to start the sail to Ngamba. Ngamba Island is one of the 84 islands that make up the Ssese archipelago of islands on Lake Victoria. The chimpanzee sanctuary was established in 1998 to create a suitable environment for the orphaned chimps that were rehabilitated at UWEC.
The boat cruise takes about two to three hours depending on the strength of the waves on the lake. Arrival will be in the afternoon for lunch and some relaxation at the beach.
Day 2: Forest walk and departure
Today we go to the forest to have a nature walk. This is the most exciting activity on the island. Walking through the forest takes tourists so close to the juvenile group, interacting with them, watching them jump from one tree branch to the other and also learning more about the chimps and how very similar they are to humans.
From here, have lunch at the island and board the boat back to Entebbe, either to the airport or back to Kampala; Uganda’s capital. That will mark the end of the two days’ trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary.
