Oruzogo Gorilla Family

RUHIJA GORILLA SECTOR OF BWINDI FOREST IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK.

Ruhija gorilla sector is among the four gorilla regions in the vast Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the largest host of the endangered mountain gorillas and one of the best gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda. 

Ruhija gorilla sector is situated in the eastern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and shelters a wide number of gorilla individuals ready and open for gorilla trekking activities. It should be noted that even though there are only a thousand mountain gorillas remaining in the wild, Bwindi shelters and hosts almost half of them so visitors should anticipate the best experience with the endangered mountain gorillas while at the Ruhija gorilla sector.  

Ruhija gorilla sector is one of the easily accessed gorilla regions in the park due to its proximity to the Buhoma gorilla sector that connects to the famous Queen Elizabeth National Park, the most visited national park in ‘Uganda, and second largest after the great Murchison Falls national park, one of the oldest national parks in Uganda. 

There are about four habituated gorilla family groups in the Ruhija gorilla sector open for gorilla trekking activities. The rest of the gorilla sectors to make four are Rushaga, Buhoma and Nkuringo gorilla sector.  The four gorilla families at Ruhija gorilla sector include Oruzogo gorilla family, Bitukura gorilla family, Kyaguliro gorilla family and  Mukiza gorilla family. 

There are 168 gorilla trekking permits sold daily at Bwindi impenetrable forest and only adults above the age of 15 years can engage in gorilla trekking activities. Tracking gorillas in the Ruhija gorilla sector starts off at 7:30 am after a brief meeting with the park rangers and tour guides before trekkers are divided into a group of eight and allocated to one particular gorilla family group. 

Some of the popular tourism activities that can be enjoyed by visitors while at the Ruhija gorilla sector include bird watching where a variety of stunning bird species including hornbills and dusky crimson can be sighted. Ruhija is also one of the best spots for birding in Bwindi.    

Another popular tourism activity at Ruhija gorilla sector is the forest nature walks where visitors get to explore more of the beauty of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. Long nature forest walks are a must-do as they enable visitors to have a taste of what it feels like to dive into the thick dense forests of Bwindi and the soothing plant life in this area. 

Several animal species and key physical attractions including fresh water sources and majestic mountains can also be noticed during treks. The Batwa cultural experience while at Ruhija is hardly missed. This is where visitors get to dive into the lifestyle of the Batwa who originally lived and survived in these forests with the gorillas.     

ORUZOGO GORILLA FAMILY.

HISTORY, UNIQUENESS AND MEMBERS OF THE ORUZOGO GORILLA FAMILY. 

Oruzogo gorilla family is one of the four habituated gorilla families in the Ruhija gorilla sector. This gorilla family first received its first visitors in 2011, 12 years ago. Oruzogo is the second habituated gorilla family in the great Bwindi and has about 22 gorilla members inclusive of two silverbacks, one of them is Tibirikwata a dominant silverback and leader of the family, Kaganga is the other in the family and the name means the giant one, Bwoba and Busungu are other gorilla members in the family.

There has been progress in the family as its members are growing in number, for example in 2011, two females known as Musi and Nta Murungi in the family gave birth to beautiful gorillas. There is also an adult female known as Kakobe who interestingly gave birth to twin gorillas. 

Watching the playful infant gorillas of Oruzogo family is a wholesome experience. Oruzogo gorilla family was once the largest family with many gorilla individuals in Bwindi impenetrable national park. 

Other gorilla members in the Oruzogo family group include Otaka, Nyakiina, Katooto, Karimi, Kiromba, Kashundwe, and Buchura the youngest. Visitors are advised to prepare in advance in terms of where to stay while they go tracking the Oruzongo gorilla family. 

Before embarking on this thrilling experience, visitors are first briefed about how to behave once the gorillas are tracked, then divided into groups of eight trekkers and one group is allocated to track Oruzogo gorilla family. 

Visitors can opt to have a night stay at one of the accommodation facilities in Buhoma sector which is just a two hours drive then prepare for the Ruhija sector that shelters the Oruzogo family. Members of the Oruzogo family group are bold and playful and most visitors have always fallen for them hence visiting them over and over again.
