Hiking trails in Mountain Elgon 

Mount Elgon is a large dormant volcanic mountain located at the border of Uganda and Kenya. This mountain has the largest volcanic base in the whole world which is at 4,000km2. The mountain is 4,321m high with a whole surface area of 1,121 km2 with a diameter of 80 kilometres. 

The conducive climate of this mountain has enabled the flourishing of the flora and fauna that gave birth to Mountain Elgon National Park. Mountain Elgon has the following trails for those who want to hike Wagagai summit which is the highest peak. 

Mountain Elgon has four trailing routes however there are only three routes that are mainly used. The following are the hiking trails that will take you to the great heights of mountain Elgon.

Piswa hiking trail

This is a stress-free trail yet very long, it’s on the north side of the mountain and starts from Kapkwata village which is at an altitude of 2,190m. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Karamoja plains and Nandi hills in Kenya. While hiking using this trail, you will spend about 7 days to hit the peak. You can decide to come from the same route or use a different one.

Sasa hiking trail

This is the shortest trail to Wagagai Peak 4,231m2 which begins from Budadiri trading center at an altitude of 1,250m, taking you only 3 days to reach the peak and the 4th day is for slopping again. The ascent here is so steep that when you reach Mudangi cliffs you have to use ladders to climb up, this is at 1,650m. 

You will have much sweating but later yield a magnificent result of the day since you will gain the great heights and breathtaking views. 

Sipi hiking trail

This trail covers 56km which can be covered in about 4 to 6 days depending on one’s hiking speed. The hiking will start from Kapkwai Forest Exploration Center which is a bit distant from Sipi Falls. This trail will take you through Tatum Cave which bears ancient cave paintings.

Suam hiking trail 

The Suam hiking trail is another long trail that will take 4 to 5 days and follows the Suam River near the Kapkwata trail. You will go through Suam Gorge to hot springs on the eastern side of Kapkwata caldera, it will reward you with a magical view through heath and moorland, arriving at Piswa camp at a height of 2,850m. 

The trail proceeds to Wagagai Peak the tallest mountain in Elgon but after a hustle and bustle state.
