Mount Elgon is a massive extinct volcano located in the districts of Mbale, Sironko, Bududa, and Kapchorwa. Found on the Uganda-Kenya border, Mount Elgon is primarily known for its hiking tours and part of it is under Mount Elgon National Park. Mount Elgon is the second-highest mountain in Uganda with its peak, Wagagai standing at about 4,321 meters above sea level. From Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, Mount Elgon is 235 kilometers on the road through Jinja and Mbale.
Mount Elgon experiences a varied climatic pattern due to its altitude and proximity to the equator. With the lower slopes characterized by a tropical climate, the temperatures range from mid to warm year-round. At higher altitudes, the temperatures steadily rise, resulting in cooler conditions. The average rainfall follows a bimodal distribution with 2 distinct rainy seasons, the long rains in March to May, and the short rains in October to November. The dry seasons are experienced from June to August and December to February.
Mount Elgon displays a rich assortment of vegetation zones ranging from the luxurious montane forests at lower altitudes to the sparse afro-alpine moorland at relatively higher altitudes. At the lower slopes, there are towering hardwood tree species including mahogany and cedar with undergrowth of ferns, orchids, and mosses. Bamboo trees thrive in cooler and wetter conditions at mid-altitudes, providing habitat for myriad wildlife species including forest elephants and primates among others. At higher altitudes, the landscape transitions into open heathland and alpine moorland characterized by low shrubs, tussock grasses, and unique plant species such as the giant lobelias and groundsels.
