Mount Elgon is a massive extinct volcano located in the districts of Mbale, Sironko, Bududa, and Kapchorwa. Found on the Uganda-Kenya border, Mount Elgon is primarily known for its hiking tours and part of it is under Mount Elgon National Park. Mount Elgon is the second-highest mountain in Uganda with its peak, Wagagai standing at about 4,321 meters above sea level. From Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, Mount Elgon is 235 kilometers on the road through Jinja and Mbale.

The Piswa trail
The Piswa trail is long and offers a more rugged and challenging hiking experience on Mount Elgon. The Piswa trail can take 7 days covering 49 kilometers. The Piswa trail starts from the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre and allows you to traverse bamboo forests, heathland, and moorland. On the Piswa trail, expect steep ascents and descends and also opportunities to spot wildlife species like buffalo and bushbucks among others. The Sipi trail
The Sipi trail is 56 kilometers and takes 4-6 days to complete the roundtrip. This is the longest and starts from the Kapkwai forest exploration center at 2,050 meters through the northwestern side of Mountain Elgon. You will also hike towards the caldera through Tutum Cave.
The Sasa trail
This is the most popular trail for travelers hiking Mount Elgon. The Sasa trail round trip is the shortest but toughest route that takes 4 days starting from the Budadiri trailhead. The Sasa trail winds its way through the dense montane forest, presenting you with the opportunity to spot various wildlife species including the colobus monkey, the duiker, and others. You will gradually ascend through a series of switchbacks, eventually reaching the caldera rim and the stunning Jackson’s summit. Here, you will have panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

When you arrive at Mount Elgon, you will be guided to the designated trailheads or starting points for the hiking adventure. The best time to go for a Mount Elgon hiking tour is during the dry seasons which typically occur from December to February and June to August. During these months, rainfall is minimal hence making the trails less muddy and slippery for hiking. The skies are usually clear to offer better visibility for hiking tours and opportunities to view and appreciate the stunning landscapes even from as far as Karamoja. However, since weather patterns in Uganda are sometimes unpredictable, expect rain showers even during the dry seasons.
