Gorilla permits are legal documents issued by governments to allow visitors trek and meet gorillas in their natural setting one-on-one. Gorillas can be found mainly in two gorilla destinations – Virunga national park with mountain gorillas and Kahuzi-Biega national park with the eastern lowland gorillas.

Gorilla trekking permits in Congo are highly competitive since they are the cheapest in Africa and world over. Other gorilla destinations have expensive permits, Uganda at 700$ and Rwanda (the most expensive) at 1500$. Therefore, visitors interested in trekking Congo gorillas should book first since the permits are issued on a first come first serve basis. So to be on the safer side, book your Congo gorilla permits at least 2 to 3 months before the day of trekking.

During peak season which is the Dry Season, Congo gorilla permits are highly demanded. This is from December to February and June to August. While during wet / low season, Congo gorilla permits are not highly demanded. This season starts from March to May and September to November. In case of cancellations, there is no refund of gorilla permits in Congo and particularly in Virunga national park. But gorilla permits can be rescheduled to any later date when you are ready to travel. Congo gorilla permit can only be reserved after full payment of the gorilla permit price.

What is included and excluded in the Congo gorilla permit?

Congo gorilla permit price includes guide / ranger fees, park entrance; but excludes transportation, accommodation, porter fees, meals and other items of personal nature. You are advised to book your gorilla permit easily through licensed local tour operator since they are always updated about availability of gorilla permits.

The money used to buy gorilla permits helps in conservation, paying rangers and improving community livelihoods in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Gorillas are one of the unique primates that share up to 98% of blood DNA with humans making them have similar behaviors and characters. They live in groups called families and each group is under the leadership of a silverback. The role of a silverback is to mate with all female gorillas in the group and offer protection to the entire family. Each gorilla family has its uniqueness; some have babies while others have juveniles and others have black backs, etc. gorillas are also called gentle giants due to the way they behave and react towards any situation.

Visitors booking gorilla trekking permits in Congo are normally advised to add a city tour in Kigali where interesting sites like Kigali genocide museum, historical monuments, Kigali Mountain, local markets and more can be visited.

Also, one can perfectly combine a gorilla trek in Virunga with Mount. Nyiragongo hike, one of the most active Volcanoes in Africa.

We went on a two-week trip with my family, organised by Coleb from Standard Safaris.I had my concerns about organised trips, but this one didn’t justify any of those. Everything went very smoothly, even when some problems arose with one of the cars it got fixed by next morning, the accomodations were clean and comfortable, the programs were exciting and well-balanced - everything was done to a truly high standard.If you plan to visit Uganda and are looking for a guide, I warmly recommend Coleb and his team. In case you have a choice of drivers, go for Godwin, his presence made this trip even more enjoyable - cheerful, helpful, good sense of humour, generally a great person. Just look for the guy with a big smile and big heart:)

We are all extremely grateful Standard Safaris for an incredible East Africa experience. I recently booked a custom trip for group of 8 people, including an 8-year-old boy, from Kampala through Queen Elizabeth National Park and on to Rwanda and Burundi. Very organized travel operator who chose awesome guide to make our trip wonderful.We booked a nine days trip with Standard Safaris and all was perfect from start to finish. Coleb was very prompt at replying and easy to liaise with ahead of the trip. The company has very courteous tour guides with wide knowledge of fauna and frola in the whole of East Africa.The choice of safari Lodges is good with first class treatment.Game drive security is assured.Almost The whole of September I was traversing through DRC, Uganda,and Rwanda on a gorilla tour and wildlife expedition.Everything was arranged and booked perfectly by Standard Safaris.The owner, Coleb was always helpful whenever we needed to ask questions about this gorilla safari in Uganda and beyond.It was a complex expedition but Standard safaris and Coleb made it look amazingly easy.I’ll recommend Standard safaris 200%, for all gorilla safaris in Uganda, Rwanda and wildlife tours in east africa.
