Yes, a gorilla habituation experience is surely worth the cost in Uganda. Gorilla habituation experience involves joining a group of researchers and habituators in Bwindi Forest to participate in habituating a gorilla family. This is purposefully to make the gorillas get familiar with human presence. But at the same time, the visitor gets a memorable encounter with the critically endangered mountain gorillas in their pristine home.
Why gorilla habituation experience worth the cost?
A gorilla habituation experience is worthwhile due to a number of reasons. Firstly, the experience offers an extended duration of up to 4 hours while viewing the gorillas. This starts as soon as you encounter the gorilla family. Instead of the 1 hour offered during a regular gorilla trek, you get additional time to observe the behaviors of gorillas.
Secondly, you spend time with a semi-habituated gorilla family. Unlike the predictable habituated gorilla group you observe during gorilla trekking, you spend time with a semi-habituated group. This offers authentic and raw experiences since the gorilla family is still in the process of becoming familiar with human presence.
Thirdly, the gorilla habituation experience is more intimate compared to a gorilla trek. This is because a group of not more than 4 visitors is allowed to enjoy a gorilla habituation experience. This is in comparison to a maximum of 8 visitors allowed during a gorilla trekking tour. Visitors on a gorilla habituation experience, therefore, get more private experiences.
Fourthly, during a gorilla habituation experience, the presence of expert trackers and researchers with gorillas makes the trip worthwhile. They offer in-depth knowledge of the gorilla family, including family structure, foraging behavior, and habitats, among many others. Therefore, the gorilla habituation experience is also for education.
Lastly, with a duration of 4 hours, photography is even better than during a regular gorilla trekking trip. There is time to capture as many high-quality photos as compared to doing so in only an hour. This is because doing so in 4 hours allows you not to feel rushed, hence get perfect angles and light to capture the photos.

When to travel for a gorilla habituation experience in Uganda?
The Rushaga sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is open for gorilla habituation experiences throughout the year. This implies that the choice of visiting the destination for a gorilla habituation experience rests solely with you. For us at Standard Safaris, we recommend that you plan your trip based on the season that suits your preference and desired experience.
For instance, we recommend that you travel during the dry season if you prefer a less challenging gorilla habituation experience. This is due to the fact that the gorilla trails are less damp in comparison to the wet season. Since the chances of rainfall are lower in the dry season, the experience is continuous. Forest undergrowth is less dense, to affects the visibility of the gorillas.
The dry season at Rushaga sector is experienced in the dry months between June to August. Another relatively dry period falls in December-February. These months also offer cooler temperatures because of the low humidity in the forest. If you desire quite challenging experiences when the rains are heavier, travel during March-May and September-November.
