Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was gazzeted in the year 1991 located in extreme southwestern Uganda covering an area of 321 sq. km in Kisoro district. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is known as the only place where gold meets silver due to the presence of magnificent endangered mountain gorillas as well as the shy golden monkeys both co-existing in this small national park.

The park is second to Bwindi’s impenetrable national park in hosting mountain gorillas and providing ultimate gorilla trekking experiences to tourists. Mgahinga not only hosts mountain gorillas but is also home to the rare primate species – golden monkeys making it the only place in Uganda where golden monkey trekking is done.

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a thrilling and adventurous experience that you get to encounter once in a lifetime. This activity takes place early in the morning commencing with a short briefing done at Ntebeko Park headquarters.

The briefing involves the dos and don’ts of this activity. After this session, you are led by an experienced guide leading you through the thickets of Mgahinga National Park in search of the endangered mountain gorillas.

This activity takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on where these gorillas will be found. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one habituated gorilla family known as Nyakagezi. This family is composed of nine members; 4 silverbacks, 2 infants, 2 adult females, and 1 juvenile led by a dormant silverback called Mark.

Trekking the Nyakagezi gorilla family is easy because members are found to be in narrow ranges for relaxing, and feeding. Once you get to encounter them, you are given one hour to be up close with them as you observe how they feed, hunt, and breastfeed their infants.

What makes gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park interesting and adventurous is that during the trek, you can encounter other primates like golden monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, and black and white colobus monkeys.

How to trek gorillas in Mgahinga National Park from Kisoro?

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park from Kisoro is so interesting and time-saving since both are found in southwestern Uganda on the same route. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the park headquarters from Kisoro town.

If one is not in Kisoro, they will be required to travel there using the Kampala- Kabale-Kisoro highway which is approximately 7 or 8 hours from Kampala or from Kigali, Rwanda which is a shorter route taking only 3-4 hours.

On the day of trekking, you are required to wake up early morning and travel to the park headquarters to be able to attend the pre-gorilla trekking briefing session where you are told what to and not to do once you reach the presence of gorillas.

You are then sent into the jungle to trek these magnificent apes for about 2 to 3 hours depending on where you find them. You are given strictly one hour to be up close with gorillas as you take a few snaps for memories. Once this is done, you head back to the starting point, get a certificate of participation, and then head back to your designated destination.
