Nile tilapias move in schools and reproduce through mass spawning of broods in nests that were built by a male. The young grow very fast and within a few months, they will start reproduction. This is a good reason why there are usually many in the Ugandan waters. They are primarily herbivores, yet their young tend to be omnivores. They feed mainly during the day, mainly on algae, phytoplankton, aquatic insect larvae, etc. Nile tilapias are also maternal mouthbrooders, with care for the young done exclusively by the females.
