Gorilla trekking
Gorilla trekking has put Uganda safaris at the top not just in Africa but the entire world. Uganda is part of the few places in the world where one can encounter mountain gorillas. This is because the country has two of its national parks in the Virunga conservation area, the remaining habitat of mountain gorillas in the world.
These national parks of Uganda in this conservation area include Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Gorilla trekking involves encountering mountain gorillas in their natural environment after traversing through the dense vegetation and rough terrain. The process of trekking gorillas in Uganda takes about 4-5 hours including the hour spent with the gorillas. However, this time is not constant as it depends on a lot of factors like the distance the trekked gorilla family is and the weather.
Game drives
A Uganda safari is not complete without a game drive experience in its vast savannah destinations. Game drives involve visitors on a comfortable safari vehicle spotting the wildlife in their natural habitats. These game drives give visitors a chance to come close to wildlife for an up-close look. In Uganda, game drives can be experienced in the national parks of Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Semuliki, Lake Mburo, and Kidepo Valley National Parks. Various wildlife species can be encountered including lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, waterbucks, elands, zebras, impalas, giraffes, reedbucks, antelopes, etc.
Chimpanzee trekking
Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is one of the best in the world as it provides visitors with a chance to encounter and spot these chimpanzee primates in their natural habitats. Chimpanzees share over 98.8% of human DNA thus adding to the excitement of encountering them. Uganda is well vast with various chimpanzee destinations which include Kibale Forest National Park, Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest Reserve, Budongo Forest Reserve, and also Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to mention but a few. After navigating the dense tropical rainforest of the destinations, visitors arrive at the habitats of the chimpanzees and are given an hour to spend in their presence.
Boat cruise
A boat cruise experience in Uganda is a great way to unveil the aquatic wildlife in the many destinations. Boat cruise experience helps visitors explore the various rivers and lakes in most of the destinations offering incredible scenic views of nature and wildlife. Expect to encounter animals like hippos and crocodiles as the freshwater rulers but also other animals like elephants, buffaloes, and antelopes that come to the shorelines. Kazinga Channel, Victoria Nile in Murchison Falls National Park, and Lake Mburo are some of the boat cruise destinations in the country.
Golden monkey trekking
Golden monkey trekking like other treks involves encountering the rare golden monkeys in their natural habitat for an hour after traversing through the thickets. Golden monkeys are rare primate species and no wonder in the entire country are only located in Mgahinga Gorillas National Park.
Birding
Birding is part of the Uganda safaris and visitors can experience some of the country’s popular bird species. A birding adventure allows visitors to explore a variety of birds including Albertine Rift endemic species and resident species. Visitors can also encounter migratory bird species that fly into the park in different seasons.
The birds to see include the papyrus canary, papyrus gonolek, great blue turaco, western nicator, black-crowned waxbill, grey-winged robin-chat, superb sunbird, white-spotted flufftail, redheaded bluebill, swamp flycatcher, yellow-spotted barbet, etc. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, Mabamba Wetland, Mubwindi Swamp, Lake Mburo National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Queen Elizabeth National Park among others are some of the few birding destinations in the country.
