- Mountain gorillas
Mountain gorillas are the most popular tourist attraction in Uganda. Mountain gorillas are an endangered species of primates only located in the Virunga conservation area. This conservation area encompasses Uganda’s two popular national parks Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. These national parks combined harbor more than half of the remaining mountain gorilla population.
These gentle apes dwell in the highland areas hence their name mountain gorillas. They live in groups known as gorilla families and each family is headed by a dominant male gorilla called a silverback. Mountain gorillas in Uganda can be encountered on a gorilla trekking experience that allows visitors to spend an hour with them or a habituation adventure that allows four hours in the presence of these mountain gorillas.
- Uganda’s Big 5 animals
Uganda is a harbor of Africa’s Big 5 animals that is lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos. These animals gained their name centuries back as they were extremely hard to hunt down by trophy hunters. Uganda’s savannah national parks harbor some of these animals such as Lake Mburo National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Kidepo Valley National Park.

- Lots of Birds
Uganda is a popular hub for bird species with over 1,100 bird species. Uganda alone accounts for 50% of Africa’s bird species and over 11% of the world’s bird population. The country harbors some of the rare species like the shoebill stock.
The different vegetation zones of Uganda harbor these birds and there are both migratory and endemic birds. Birdwatching is a popular activity that is done in most national parks and other areas like wetlands, lakes, and rivers.

Chimpanzees are the most playful of all the primates in Uganda. The country has over 5,000 chimpanzee primates that harbor the rainforest area of the country. Some of the popular destinations for chimpanzees in Uganda include Kibale Forest National Park, Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest, and Budongo Forest. Chimpanzees can be encountered on a chimpanzee tracking experience in those destinations.
- The mighty Murchison Falls
Murchison Falls is the world’s strongest waterfall and is located in Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda. It is a popular destination that has attracted thousands of visitors to witness the sheer power of the falls. The falls are located on the Victoria Nile a tributary of the River Nile.
Large volumes of water traveling at high speeds are squeezed through an 8-meter rock wall before plunging over 43 meters high into a small pool causing a loud thunderous roar. This mighty piece of Mother Nature is topped off by a rainbow that is formed above it.
- Golden monkeys
Golden monkeys are rare species of primates that have golden-like fur on their cheeks. They are elusive creatures that are so rare to see and are only located in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the country and not anywhere else in the country. They can also be encountered on a tracking adventure experience. Unlike their gigantic cousins the mountain gorillas who stay in the highland areas, the golden monkeys dwell in the bamboo forest on the foothills of the mountain.
- Mountain Rwenzori
Uganda’s Mountain Rwenzori is a popular mountain located in the western region of Kasese district. It is the tallest mountain in Uganda and the third highest in East Africa after Mountain Kilimanjaro of Tanzania and Mount Kenya of Kenya.
This snowcapped mountain is named the Mountains of the Moon by the locals given that its peak stretches high above the clouds. It can be explored on a hiking adventure to the peak that is covered by glaciers.
- Tree-climbing lions
Tucked away in the Ishasha plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the tree-climbing lions should be on your bucket list for 2025. How can lions climb trees you may wonder? Well, as earlier mentioned Uganda is a popular hub of surprising adventures and the tree-climbing lions are one of those adventures.
The lions of Ishasha came up with a plan to rest and avoid being harassed by the crawling biting ants that disrupt their rest and decided to learn how to climb trees. The savannah plains of Ishasha have big fig trees that support the weight of their heavy predators. These can be spotted on a game drive experience and a lion tracking adventure resting in the fig tree branches after devouring their prey.
