Overview.
The 10 Days Triple Gorilla Trek & Nyiragongo Hiking safari gives one a chance to explore all the 3 countries that host mountain gorillas. Start in Bwindi Impenetrable national park in Uganda, Volcanoes national park in Rwanda and then cross to D.R. Congo for a lifetime adventure hiking an active volcano and camping on its top.
Track the mountain gorillas in the famous Virunga National park in DRC. The safari ends with a city tour in Kigali.
Trip in Details.
Day 1-Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The driver guide will pick you from your place of accommodation in Kampala and you will drive to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The park is famous for its large number of gorilla population with over 495 gorillas. You will drive for about 7 hours, passing through the Uganda equator in Kayabwe, crossing the golden savannah landscapes of Ankole and via the beautiful landscapes of Ntungamo and Kabale; you will head to your selected sector for gorilla tracking the next day. Check in for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2- Gorilla Tracking.
Have an early breakfast; your drive guide takes you to the park offices for a briefing before gorilla tracking adventure. By 8:00am, the guide will lead you in a group of 8 into the forest in search of these apes. The time spent tracking will depend on the gorillas’ movements and we advise to carry packed lunch, enough drinking water and good hiking shoes.
After hours of tracking, you will finally come face to face with the mountain gorillas and you will be allowed an hour with them. After the one hour, descend to the park offices, receive your gorilla tracking certificates, and return to your lodge for refreshment and relaxation. In the evening, you can opt to take a walk through the local communities.
Day 3-Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
After breakfast, embark on the drive through Kisoro and cross to Rwanda again for Volcanoes national park. Volcanoes national park is about 29km drive from Kisoro and is famous for gorilla tracking, golden monkeys and also as a historical base camp for the renown conservationist and primatologist Dian Fossey.
Arrive at the park; check in at the lodge for lunch. After lunch take a guided walk and visit the twin lakes. Later return for dinner and overnight.
Day 4- Gorilla tracking and culture tour.
Have breakfast at the lodge and transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for gorilla trekking. You will have a briefing by the head ranger then drive to the starting point of your Gorilla Tracking and prime activity. The ranger guide will lead you into the dense forest for tracking and upon getting to the gorillas, you will stay with them for an hour as they go about their daily life.
After the tracking, your driver Guide will transfer you to your lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will visit Ibyiwachu culture village.
Day 5- Transfer to Virunga national park.
Have breakfast and prepare to drive to the Democratic republic of Congo. Your guide will transfer you from your lodge to the border via Gisenyi to the park. You will cross to Goma and check in at your lodge, have lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing as you prepare for the Hike.
Day 6- Nyiragongo Hike.
Rise early and have breakfast. You will drive for about 15kms from Goma to Virunga Park headquarters. Upon arrival, you will join other trekkers, a ranger guide will brief about the hike, and after you will be given a ranger who will lead you as you hike.
Go through the lush vegetation as you trek and summit the rim. Standing at the vent, visitors can peep down into a churning lava lake, see, and hear hot gases exploding up though a mosaic of molten lava. You will have an overnight stay at the camp on top of Nyiragongo and have a chance to experience and have views of the red hot magma in the vent of the mountain.
Day 7- Descend Mount. Nyiragongo and back to the lodge
Today morning after breakfast at the camp, you will descend, and meet your driver guide who will transfer you to the lodge for a shower and lunch. Rest at your or you can opt for a tour in Goma town.
Day 8- Gorilla tracking in Virunga National Park.
Transfer to the park headquarters after an early morning breakfast for briefing. After briefing start gorilla trekking led by a ranger guide and after a few hours of trekking you come to contact with the gorilla family. You will be allowed to spend an hour with the family, learning about them and watching them carry on their daily lives. After return to the camp for lunch. After lunch, you will relax at your lodge and spend an overnight.
Day 9- Return to Kigali city.
In the morning, have breakfast at the lodge and drive back to the border. Check out of DRC and your driver will transfer you to Kigali. On the way you will enjoy spectacular views of Rwanda’s countryside. Have an overnight at a pre-booked lodge or hotel in Kigali.
Day 10- City tour and departure.
Today is the last day of the 10 days’ tour. You will have breakfast at the lodge and check out of the lodge. Do a short tour to Kigali genocide memorial site, craft markets and shop some souvenirs and later have lunch at a local foods restaurant and drive to the airport for departure.
