Congo Gorilla Permits

Congo gorilla permits are available at USD 400 for each foreigner and USD 200 for nationals. Each visitor must be at least 15 years old. The reason for this is that children may not manage the intense long hikes and treks through the thick jungles. Sometimes, they may not easily adhere to the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. Excellent gorilla trekking tours are offered in Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks. The country is the newest member in the East African Community, neighboring countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Angola, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Zambia and South Sudan.

Gorillas are one of the unique primates that share up to 98% of blood DNA with humans making them have similar behaviors and characters. They live in groups called families and each group is under the leadership of a silverback gorilla. The role of a silverback is to mate with all female gorillas in the group and offer protection to the entire family. Each gorilla family has its uniqueness; some have babies while others have juveniles and others have black backs, etc. Gorillas are also called gentle giants due to the way they behave and react towards any situation.

Booking Congo Gorilla permits.

Congo gorilla permits are not as highly competitive to acquire and as mentioned above, are the cheapest in Africa and world over. Other gorilla destinations have expensive permits, for in stance, Uganda at USD 800 and Rwanda (the most expensive) at USD 1500. By the way, it is not unusual to get a permit at the headquarters of Virunga National Park. But, visitors interested in trekking Congo gorillas should book first since the permits are issued on a first come first serve basis. To be on the safer side, book your Congo gorilla permits at least 2 to 3 months before the day of trekking.

During peak season which is the dry season, Congo gorilla permits are relatively on high demand. This is from December to February and June to August. Meanwhile during wet / low season, Congo gorilla permits are not highly demanded. This season starts from March to May and September to November. In case of cancellations, there is no refund of gorilla permits in Congo and particularly in Virunga National Park. But gorilla permits can be rescheduled to any later date when you are ready to travel. To reserve you permit, you must make full payment of the price.

What is included and excluded in the Congo gorilla permit?

Congo gorilla permit price includes guide / ranger fees, park entrance. However, the permit excludes transportation, accommodation, porter fees, meals and other items of personal nature. You are advised to book your gorilla permit easily through licensed local tour operator since they are always updated about availability of gorilla permits. The money used to buy gorilla permits helps in conservation, paying rangers and improving community livelihoods in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We recommend you add a Kigali city tour if you plan to trek gorillas in Congo. Interesting sites to visit include Kigali Genocide Museum, Kigali Mountain, local markets like Kimironko and more. Also, one can perfectly combine a gorilla trek in Virunga National Park with Mountain Nyiragongo hike, one of the most active Volcanoes in Africa.

We booked a 9-Days safari in Uganda with Standard Safaris, all-inclusive with a driver guide, all tour activities, permits and lodges. Honestly, we were very happy to have George as our guide. He drove us safely around the country and explained many things along the way. Thanks to him, we were able to spot many animals in the national parks, and we always stayed on track with our itinerary. The jeep was new and well maintained, however, the seats in the back were quite high with small windows, which made it difficult to look outside. If there were 10 stars I would give them. From my first "Hello" with Coleb to our last set of selfies on the equator with Denis, this tour company out-did themselves!! Absolutely professional and helpful from beginning to end. We're already booking another trip for next year! They had organised everything- gorilla permits, chimpanzee permits, all national park entrance fees, lodgings, every meal included. It was so easy I didn't even know where we were going until we were there! Pure relaxation.
