Rwanda Forests

What a beautiful country Rwanda is!

Did you know, or have you ever noticed that Rwanda is one of the most beautiful countries among the countries that we have in Africa? Rwanda is an amazing country dotted with numerous mountains and hills in the west, blessed with lakes and rivers all over the country and Savannah in the southeast.

Compared to its neighbors, Rwanda contains numerous crater lakes and rivers, but it remains a land-locked country just like Burundi and Uganda. Rwanda is bordered by Burundi in the south, Uganda in the north, the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west and Tanzania in the east.

Rwanda is also known as the cleanest and well-secured country all around its capital city Kigali and deep in villages with hospitable people.  Rwanda is blessed with four protected areas which  are national parks, homes to different wildlife and are also recognized as protected areas are due to the tropical rainforest vegetation.

In addition to the above, there are only four types of forests that are found in Rwanda that is to say, artificial forests that consist of exotic tree species, and the natural forest which is located near Volcanoes National Park and Akagera National Park. There are also the biological forests of Congo Nile ridge and those are the Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura forests then without forgetting the part that remained in savannah forests.

Despite the above, the major three forests in Rwanda contribute much to the country’s economy since they are the homes of different wildlife that attract most of the tourists to travel to Rwanda for great experiences. Take an example of volcanoes forest national Park which harbors the great primate, mountain gorillas whose trekking permit is quite expensive compared to other countries like Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nyungwe forest and Gishwati-Mukura forests are mainly for amazing chimpanzees.

Due to the fact Rwanda forests has different wildlife, activities such as gorilla trekking in volcanoes can be done, chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura forests, nature walks where you interact with the beauty of nature and get a chance to spot other wild animals like the forest elephants, warthogs, buffaloes and many more, hiking where you allow muscles to stretch and better movement of blood without leaving behind the bird lovers.

Birding is the best experience with over 200 bird species recorded like Ruwenzori batis, Rwenzori Turaco, archer’s ground robin, strange weaver, Kivu ground thrush, mountain masked Apalis, dusky crimson wing, red-faced woodland warbler, handsome spurfowl, regal sunbird and many others.

Rwanda’s forests used to face many problems as other countries do like getting encroached on, bushfires and charcoal making that increase day and night though the government is trying to put up measures on how to stop all these practices.

Most tourists normally inquire about what to carry if one is interested in travelling to explore Rwanda’s forests. The first answer is; since you heading to tropical rainforests don’t forget to carry your rain gears like rain jackets and umbrellas, binoculars mostly for bird lovers and even those who are not, just to view distant features, cameras to take photos for remembrance, energy giving snacks like biscuits and cookies since there are some simple hikes, insect repellants, sun screen and your backpack to keep your gadgets safe.

It’s always better to plan your forest safari to Rwanda during the dry season which is easy since the country is has four climate seasons. There is a long dry season that runs from June to august and a short dry season from December to February. The long rain season normally starts from March to May and the short rainy season is from September to November. Therefore, our company normally recommends its visitors to always travel during the dry season for a better experience and great view.
